Elder Wisdom Council; What Is It? How Does It Work?

American Indian Wisdom - Black Elk, The Power Of The Circle

INTRODUCTION

Elders have been part of all tribes and forms of government since humans started living together in organized groups, tribes, villages, towns and cities. It was usually an elder that was well respected in the community that was 'elected' to a position of leadership. The difference between a wise elder and anyone else, is that a wise elder takes the long view, looking ahead 7 future generations and including a global village (a sustainable viewpoint of acting locally but thinking globally) before giving advice or making a decision that would affect an individual, a community, a nation or a global village. Here are a few examples of elder wisdom councils in action....

AMERICAN INDIAN WISDOM - CHIEF JOSEPH - The Great Spirit gives everyone a home according to their 'just desserts'.

BOTTOMS UP DECISION MAKING

Wise elders also have the attribute of holding a community meeting and gaining maximum input from all sides and all points of view, before making a decision that is in the best interests of 7 future generations. A wise elder also keeps in mind the departed loved ones ancestors and spirits and honors them as well, because they are part of the circle of life and their reality will be ours, guaranteed. This is part of natural law, which includes the spiritual world as well as the physical one. Elders honor the memory of previous generations who sacrificed and held sacred the world to pass it on to THIS generation in as good a condition or better than they received it.

ACT AND MAKE DECISIONS ON BEHALF OF 7 FUTURE GENERATIONS

Wise elders also have the attribute of not acting rashly, based on the emotion of the moment or for greed/profit alone, and they also forgive slights, insults, things said in the heat of debate, and name calling, which happens in human arrangements. In other words, decisions are not made based on favoritism, jealousy, greed or minutia that have no value compared to the value of protecting what is being held in trust for seven future generations of our children. The grandmothers council is a wise elder organization that follows this timeless and universal principle.

The US Senate is based on this principle, and is the reason why members hold office for longer terms than the members in the Congress, which is replaced on a fairly quick basis. The problem is that the Senate does not consider their decisions and the effect on 7 future generations.

PROTECT OUR SACRED WORLD AND SACRED RESOURCES

At the best and highest definition of the term, wise elders also have in common a sense of the 'sacred', which most so called modern day leaders and wisdom councils in the form of corporations, non profits or other community groups, do not possess for the most part, which is what created the 45 plus negative tipping points that future generations will have to deal with and suffer from. Their birthright has been sold for a few measly worthless pieces of paper.

Definition of Sacred

A simple definition of what is sacred is this... The commons are sacred, to be held in trust for 7 future generations in a way that holds them in the present condition or improves them. What are the 'sacred' commons? Land, air, water, resources such as farm soil, minerals, groundwater, trees, plants, and animals.

This sacred quality of all things that are common to all living things has been lost in the global rush for short term profits, at any cost. When nothing is sacred, everything can be destroyed or sold for profit. The whole world and everyone in it is for sale to the lowest bidder, with the biggest bribe behind the scenes, and the most assassins and a military to back up their demand for whatever they want. Until people stand up to and quit supporting warmongers, war profiteers, and mindless profits at any cost corporations, the destruction will continue.

Sacred grove definition
"Around 14,000 sacred groves have been reported from all over India, which act as reservoirs of rare fauna, and more often rare flora, amid rural and even urban settings. Experts believe that the total number of sacred groves could be as high as 100,000. Threats to the groves include urbanization, over-exploitation of resources, and environmental destruction..."
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sacred_grove

In the US, the closest definition to sacred are the system of National Parks, but the orientation is not on protecting and preserving what is there for seven future generations in a sustainable manner, not yet anyway.

There is such a difference between this definition of what is sacred, and what people are aware of, that most people in the US (and other countries as well) are not even aware of what is being lost, as they keep voting in the despots that lead the whole world into total destruction. There are much deeper definitions of 'sacred'..

http://agreenroad.blogspot.com/p/corporations-art-and-science-of.html

IF IT IS NOT NEEDED WITHIN THE SACRED, DON'T DO IT

A more simple and easy to understand definition is this; if it not absolutely needed, do not do it. For example, a uranium mine is NOT absolutely needed, not even if it is for 'national defense' . Digging silver, gold, uranium, oil, coal or precious gems like diamonds out of the ground is all about control, power, profits, violence and war, none of which are sustainable.

Violence and war violates the sacred law that one cannot take another person's life or property. Many diamonds and gemstones are 'blood diamonds' or conflict gems. Oil fields lead to wars or take overs of countries, due to the profit motive.

The pursuit of these resources creates monopolies and leads to more and more negative tipping points. The way out is to pursue other more sustainable options. The choices are always there, but they may mean not generating huge profits and controlling whole countries by threats, intimidation and hostile takeover.

PROTECTION OF THE COMMONS

Common's resources such as water, air, forests, and ground are now being sold to the highest bidder as fast as humanly possible. Everything is being privatized and privately owned for a profit. The downside is that this focus on commons everything is for sale, is that the profit making enterprise that 'buys' that commons, most often destroys the commons resources that they 'own' as they pull whatever profit they can out of it, and then leave town, or declare bankruptcy, to avoid the costs of cleanup or messes that they create. Then the 1% go on to do it all over again in another town.

When huge corporations leave a problem that they generated in order to produce a profit, (the rule rather than the exception) the people left in that area now are forced pay to clean it up via the Superfund process, and/or they may be forced to suffer from it for a million years, because there is no solution, and/or it is too expensive to clean up, such as the Fukushima mega nuclear disaster.

http://agreenroad.blogspot.com/2012/02/total-fukushima-radiation-released-into.html

Corporations hate wise elders who KNOW that they know the value of the sacred. Wise elders have interiorized the 'sacred' in the commons into their decision making process, and these elders resist the 'profits' at any cost push. However, large amounts of money can corrupt and influence even these wise elders or community members who vote, as proven by the fights between members of tribes when uranium miners or nuclear power plants with a lot of money behind them come in and promise all kinds of things including jobs, wine and dine the elders, give 'gifts', all in return for permission to enter the community for a profit. The cost of ignoring wise elders who have the 'sacred' built into them is high indeed, and many generations suffer the cost and consequences.

American Settlers Negative Wise Elders Model, Being Applied Today

Inside the USA, some people believe that the original 'wise elders' in the form of white older rich men who 'founded' this country are to be worshiped and celebrated;  (those who signed the Declaration of Independence). Are we celebrating historical imperial conquest, genocide and racism, or the opposite of it? Do we really want to go back to those 'good ol days', when only wealthy, white, male and usually elderly landowners could vote or own property, or have any rights?

"This is a fundamental question of democracy," said the Sentencing Project's executive director Marc Mauer. "These policies go back to the founding of this country. [The U.S.] was 'founded' as a great experiment in democracy, but it was very limited. Wealthy, white male landowners granted themselves the right to vote, but women, poor people, Indians, African Americans and people with felony convictions could not vote."

To find out more about how a wise elder can use and abuse that power, read more about it via the following link, because understanding history in the true sense of the word is important. Without an understanding of history, one is condemned to repeat the same mistakes that the forefathers made.

WISE ELDERS ARE A POSITIVE TIPPING POINT

American Indian Positive Model For Local, Regional, National, International Politics

Elders can make up a potential positive tipping point, but only if they know how to apply and interpret the concept of seven future generation type thinking. In some American Indians tribes for example, a wise women circle elected and put in power a male chief who would then represent the tribe at the Iroquois Confederacy, a forefather to the US Congress. The chiefs or medicine men often spoke of the future and predicted certain things, giving warnings, such as the following two examples.

MATRIARCHS AS CONTROLLING POWER

Wise elders operate in a world that is controlled and led by matriarchs. Women give birth to children, so they have a much closer relationship with children and care much more about future generations of children than men do overall. This is why women can fire the men even when they do act as leaders or chiefs, if they do not act in the interests of 7 future generations.

When the Native American tribal chiefs got together at their inter-tribal regional or national government meetings, they would discuss laws and agreements, as well as how those agreements and laws would affect seven future generations, before they voted.

These representatives were not 'allowed' to vote for anything that did not protect and enhance a better future for seven future generations. Combining this with the female elders council that could fire them and replace the chief with someone who really did want to benefit 7 future generations protected both the tribe, and an indefinite numbers of future generations of children, which the women would bring into the world.

MATRIARCHAL CONTROL OF MALE POLITICAL LEADERS

The Cherokee used a council 12 wise elder women to 'elect' a man to be their chief or other form of leader. In this way, the women could put in a place of power a man who would govern wisely, instead of just representing men and/or his own short term political ambitions, or getting a position due to greed. http://youtu.be/kS4uZroNXbE?t=5m

Today, a women's wise elder council exists. It is not yet included in any political body, but it should be included in all of them, in the way as described below, which would create a positive tipping point.

Female Wise Elders Councils held all power; If a male representative was not acting in a way that protected and held sacred the environment and held in trust the miraculous sacred resources and living things given to this generation, the wise women council could immediately fire and replace the elected chief.

VOTING AS SACRED DUTY

Most people these days are voting against their own interests, by wasting their votes on corporate 'financed' political candidates who have no interest in any future generations, countries, or sustainable anything.

Voting is a sacred duty, and a powerful form of government, but only if the vote of each individual is applied in the same way that a wise woman council would apply this power, otherwise it is a power that will create negative tipping points, as is happening now.

Those governments that have a way to fire a government official or leader of a group for violating environmental or future generations 'rights' via a protective matriarchal wise woman council are creating a positive tipping point, while those that do not have this, are creative a negative tipping point which allows the 1% to take over and destroy all life and the environment in ways that benefit the 1% short term, but at a cost of destroying the environment, all living things and future generations. Some examples of how it works for the 1% only are provided via these links..

ELDER - YOUTH WISDOM COUNCIL MODEL

In all cultures globally up to relatively recently, elders were a revered and honored part of community. Elders were respected, admired and sought out for advice and wise council regarding all kinds of issues, including such things as youths experiencing issues in life. The video is an example of a wise elder, who is teaching how to live, according to Natural Law, which is in harmony the Nature and all of her forces.

Having someone neutral with only your best interest at heart and having many years of experience with working through issues is worth a lot. However, in our modern globalized and supposedly 'civilized' society, families are fractured and torn apart, often living thousands of miles apart. In US culture, elders are looked down on, despised, ignored and not called on to provide the wisdom that they often have.

The organization below provides a modern civilized way of connecting wise elders and the youth, who are experiencing issues and need wise guidance, via electronic means such as email and the Internet.

The Elder Wisdom Circle (EWC) is a nonprofit organization that provides free and confidential advice on a broad range of topics. The EWC also publishes an advice column, in both a Web version and a syndicated print version that is carried in 25 publications.

The Elder Wisdom Circle is targeted towards young people looking for advice from a “cyber-grandparent”. Online advice seekers from all over the world are paired with a network of volunteer seniors (aged 60 to 105) who share their knowledge, insight, and wisdom. Most seeking advice are 15–40 years old, but people of any age can request advice on virtually any topic and will receive a free and personalized e-mail response.

How it Works

After submitting a request for advice through the EWC web site, a personal reply arrives via e-mail, usually within a few days. Advice is provided on a wide range of issues, such as love and relationships, family and child-rearing, career and self-improvement, and cooking and home care. The service is confidential and advice-seekers are assured anonymity and privacy. If a letter is selected for publication, any references to identifying information are removed; advice seekers may also request that their letter not be published.

Background

The Elder Wisdom Circle was founded in 2001 by Doug Meckelson. A 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in the San Francisco Bay Area of California, the EWC is all-volunteer run and advice is provided at no cost. Since its inception, the EWC has continued to gain in popularity and now has more than 600 advice-giving volunteers. The EWC ranks #1 in e-mail advice in the Yahoo[1] directory, and the Center for Civic Partnerships ranked the EWC one of the four most innovative inter-generational activities.[2]
