Nuclear Industry And CFC Global Warming Gases

In this article we will learn at least some of the Dirty Little Secrets of the Paducah Kentucky Uranium Enrichment plant, as told by Dr. Helen Caldicott MD and other nuclear experts.

"The Paducah Gaseous Diffusion Plant opened in 1952 to enrich uranium for defense purposes. During the 1960s the plant shifted from its defense focus to enriching uranium for nuclear power plants. The plant is currently the only facility in the U.S. that enriches uranium for use in nuclear power plants." 

Uranium enrichment is only ONE step in a very polluting, dirty, toxic process that ends up with uranium suitable for use in nuclear power plants.

Pro nuclear apologists keep claiming that these enrichment plants produce no carbon emissions and no pollution at all. They say nuclear energy is "clean, green and safe".

It is a little known fact that Uranium Enrichment accounts for a VERY large percentage of global warming CFC gases released in the USA. The United States Enrichment Corporation's sites in both Ohio and Kentucky released 800,000 pounds of CFC-114 in 1999, according to official records. This is around 95% of all CFC's released in the USA, according the EPA and Dr. Helen Caldicott MD. 

This enrichment plant is powered by TWO 1500 megawatt coal fired plants, which are one of the most global warming, and polluting power plants in existence. 

CFC-114 persists for approximately 300 years in the global atmosphere, and causes 9800 times more global warming per pound than CO2.

So the next time a pro nuclear apologist starts to prattle on about how 'clean' nuclear is, interrupt him with a couple of facts like this.. and then add on the global warming plus radioactive krypton gas, radioactive carbon gas, radioactive C02 gas that ALL nuclear plants emit, 24/7 days a week.
