Ionizing radiation is also being found and measured on tinted single vision glasses.

Abstract 
"Some ophthalmic lenses are tinted using materials which contain trace amounts of thorium or daughter products of the thorium and uranium chains. Such lenses emit small amounts of ionizing radiation. No tissue damage has been proven as a result of wearing these eyeglasses. Still, any radiation exposure is a potential hazard. Since there are many essentially nonradioactive lenses on the market, tinted lenses containing thorium contaminants would seem to represent an unnecessary risk."

Via iki Berlin "Just found it on the Internet a couple of months ago (ski jackets may also have thorium) and regarding the lenses. Went to Costco and had them call their lab before I ordered my glasses to make sure theirs was not the type that used that coating. They do not...but other labs do!!!! See for yourself by making the call or having your manufacturer do it for you."

THORIUM IN SOIL

Estimation of dose contribution from 226Ra, 232Th and 40K radon exhalation rates in soil samples from Shivalik foot hills in India.
Abstract - The concentration of radium, thorium and potassium and radon exhalation rates in soil samples collected from Shivalik foot hills in the states of Haryana and Himachal Pradesh (India) were experimentally measured. A high-resolution gamma-ray spectroscopic system was used for the measurement of natural radioactivity ((226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K) at Inter-University Accelerator Center, New Delhi, using a coaxial n-type high-purity germanium detector (EG&G, ORTEC, Oak Ridge, USA). The mass exhalation rates (EM) of radon in soil samples from the study area measured by 'sealed canister technique' using LR-115 type II track detectors varied from 50±1 to 143±6 mBqkg(-1) h(-1). The activity concentrations of (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K in various soil samples of the study area varied from 31±1.3 to 63±4.6, 53±1.8 to 78±2.6 and 472±4.8 to 630±7.0 Bq kg(-1) respectively. The results indicated some higher levels of radioactivity in Lal Dhang peak area of the hills compared with other locations under study.

The take away is that just because natural thorium is found in soil or sand, does not mean it is 'safe'. The EPA regulates what is allowable and suggests staying out of areas where elevated thorium levels are found. They also mention thorium in drinking water.

THORIUM IN DRINKING WATER


The accumulation of radioactive contaminants in drinking water distribution systems.
Abstract
"The accumulation of trace contaminants in drinking water distribution system sediment and scales has been documented, raising concerns that the subsequent release of the contaminants back to the water is a potential human exposure pathway. Radioactive contaminants are of concern because of their known health effects and because of their persistence within associated distribution system materials. The objective of this work was to measure the amount of a number of radioactive contaminants (radium, thorium, and uranium isotopes, and gross alpha and beta activity) in distribution solids collected from water systems in four states (Wisconsin, Illinois, Minnesota, and Texas). The water utilities chosen had measurable levels of radium in their source waters. In addition, 19 other elements in the solids were quantified. Water systems provided solids primarily collected during routine fire hydrant flushing. Iron was the dominant element in nearly all of the solids and was followed by calcium, phosphorus, magnesium, manganese, silicon, aluminum and barium in descending order. Gross alpha and beta radiation averaged 255 and 181 pCi/g, and were as high as 1602 and 1169 pCi/g, respectively. Total radium, thorium and uranium averaged 143, 40 and 6.4 pCi/g, respectively. Radium-226 and -228 averaged 74 and 69 pCi/g, and were as high as 250 and 351 pCi/g, respectively."
