World Food Prices Rise to Record on Sugar, Meat Costs

Are rising food prices, food shortages and famines a sign of the end times?  Famines of course have always been a problem on earth, (just re-read the story of Joseph in the book of Genesis to learn how he administered the distribution of food reserves in Egypt during a seven year famine).  However most, if not all these famines and food shortages were localized events.

The famines and food shortages that Jesus referred to would be global in scale.  While Jesus didn’t specifically indicated what the root causes would be for these events, we can deduce from other prophecies in the bible that world wide wars, economic calamities, global scale events such as earthquakes and volcanoes would cause great devastation in food production and distribution during the Great Tribulation.

Already we are seeing rising food prices due to inflationary pressures, and crop reductions from drought, and other weather factors.  Some scientists are now concerned that the world is heading into a major cooling pattern which will impact the ability of food growers around the world to meet growing world demands for food.  Here is what the bible forewarns us about with regards to these food shortages:

When the Lamb opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come!” I looked, and there before me was a black horse! Its rider was holding a pair of scales in his hand. Then I heard what sounded like a voice among the four living creatures, saying, “Two pounds of wheat for a day’s wages, and six pounds of barley for a day’s wages, and do not damage the oil and the wine!”  (An indication that small amounts of food would cost large amounts of money - inflation and shortages)  Revelation 6:5-6 NIV

Its rider was named Death, and Hades was following close behind him. They were given power over a fourth of the earth to kill by sword, famine and plague, and by the wild beasts of the earth.  (An indication that world wars would cause famine and plague resulting in many deaths)  Revelation 6:7-8 NIV

World food prices rose to a record in December on higher sugar, grain and oilseed costs, the United Nations said, exceeding levels reached in 2008 that sparked deadly riots from Haiti to Egypt. An index of 55 food commodities tracked by the Food and Agriculture Organization gained for a sixth month to 214.7 points, above the previous all-time high of 213.5 in June 2008, the Rome-based UN agency said in a monthly report. The gauges for sugar and meat prices advanced to records.
