Tower of Babel’s Ruins Waiting for Archaeologists

There are as many ideas about the identity of Babylon in the book of Revelations as there are students of bible prophecy.  In fact, there are two different Babylon’s, the religious entity of Chapter 17, which we believe has much to do with present day Rome, and the political/economic entity of Chapter 18, which is anybodies guess as to its location.  Some say it might be Rome, others say Jerusalem, and others look at New York City.
Then there are some that hold to an actual rebuilding of Babylon located in Iraq, (the Babylon of the Babylonian Empire).  It might very well be. However, considering there isn't much in present day Babylon except a few buildings that Sadam Hussein was working on, it would take decades and bucket loads of money to rebuild Babylon into something resembling a great city.  And if we are as near to the end as we surmise, then this doesn't leave much time to construct the seat of power in Babylon for the coming Antichrist.
In any event, this article is interesting for those that would hold to a literal fulfillment of Babylon as being the one located in Iraq.

After this I saw another angel coming down from heaven. He had great authority, and the earth was illuminated by his splendor. With a mighty voice he shouted: “Fallen! Fallen is Babylon the Great! She has become a home for demons and a haunt for every evil spirit, a haunt for every unclean and detestable bird. For all the nations have drunk the maddening wine of her adulteries. The kings of the earth committed adultery with her, and the merchants of the earth grew rich from her excessive luxuries.”  Revelation 18:1-3 NIV

From the article:

Archaeologists are hoping to save the ruins of the Biblical era Tower of Babel, located in Iraq, and learn how it was built before it crumbled under the weight of confusion. Following years of devastation under the dictatorship of Saddam Hussein and the ensuing American invasion of Iraq, World Monuments Fund conservationist Jeff Allen told The New York Times this week that archeologists are beginning to work on ancient Babylonian sites and possibly restore some of them.
