Flooding from Australia, to Brazil and now Sri Lanka, and not just any floods, but record setting, never before type floods. Whatever the causes of these epic disasters, they are certainly focusing the world’s attention on global weather patterns.

Flooding in Sri Lanka has forced more than one million people out of their homes, the government said Thursday as it began distributing emergency food, clothing and bedding. At least 23 people have died during a week of monsoon floods, with the centre and east of the island worst hit by rising water levels and mudslides. A spokesman for the disaster management centre in Colombo said the eastern district of Batticaloa, which saw bloody fighting in the civil war that ended in 2009, was badly affected after heavier than usual seasonal rains.

Rescuers uncovered more corpses buried under mud and wrecked homes in southeastern Brazil on Friday as the death toll from torrential rains and massive floods hit 540 people and looked certain to climb. Rivers of mud tore through towns this week in the mountainous Serrana region outside Rio de Janeiro, levelling houses, throwing cars atop buildings and leaving more than 13,500 people seeking shelter and aid.

Brazil is suffering its worst-ever natural disaster after mudslides near Rio de Janeiro killed more than 500 people, the latest toll showed Friday. Municipal officials in the Serrana region just north of Rio said at least 506 people were killed, surpassing the 437 killed in a 1967 mudslide tragedy that had been previously considered Brazil's biggest disaster.
