Modern Education System Is Not Sustainable, And Is Creating More Problems Than Solving Them

TED talks covers education, and what matters.

Kids don't learn from teachers they don't like or in courses that they do not 'fit' into because their questions are not answered about how the course fits into their lives and why it is needed specifically. Building relationships and forming connections is just as important as following a lesson plan.

Teachers never apologize to students. Why not? Do teachers job descriptions include raising the self esteem of students who have none? If not, why not? Can grades on tests be adjusted to be positive rather than negative? Teaching and learning should bring joy. Teaching kids that taking risks and following their own inner intuitive guidance could be a part of many courses.

Schools now expect all students to excel scholastically, all of the time. Students have to memorize like an Ivy League college graduate, do five hours of homework per night, and get a 4.0 in all courses, all the way through. To reach this high level, students are forced to cheat and cut corners. Only 3% of students have never cheated in high school, according to one recent study.

Students in the average American school are forced into an arbitrary mold. The courses are so hard that it means students are almost forced to lie and cheat. Students are forced into hating natural curiosity and learning.

Critical thinking skills are not focused on. Memorization of specific facts and dates is focused on and kids are expected to regurgitate them back exactly. Within a year or two those facts are forgotten and never used again.

Creativity is suppressed and made fun of. Innovation is ignored and made fun of. Play is not allowed. Art, music, poetry, journaling, theatre and creative expression is denigrated and is always the first thing to be cut rather than the last, as they should be.

Letting kids discover what they love to do is not encouraged. The joy of discovery, adventure and doing what one loves or has a passion for is discouraged. Playing is not allowed, because there is no time; schools are not a place for playing or spontaneous creative expression. Schools are serious places, just like a business. Show up on time, do the work and get rewarded with money. That is the assumption, but in this modern day world, that formula no longer works as well, if it does at all.

MOST FORMS OF INTELLIGENCE ARE IGNORED AND ARE NOT TAUGHT IN SCHOOL

There are many forms of intelligence, but schools typically focus only on one type of intelligence out of twelve; mental memorization and spitting back memorized facts on a test. Kids who test well and memorize well do well, but all of the other kids, who are also intelligent but in different ways, are left behind. This myopic focus on 1 kid out of 12 is not sustainable.

Math and science are  emphasized while art, mysteries, music and sports are either ignored, not covered, or deleted due to budget cuts. Most kids are not good at math and science, as their intelligence is in other directions that have nothing to do with math or science.

THE MYSTERY OF LIFE IS IGNORED AND DENIED BY SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES

The mysteries of life are ignored, because science is about absolute certainty, or at least that is how school portrays it.

SPIRITUALITY IS DENIED AND IGNORED BY SCHOOLS

Spirituality is also not covered in school. Comparing religions is not allowed and interfaith relations are ignored or suppressed. Talking about love, relationships, friendships, healthy boundaries, intuition or other invisible aspects of life that are actually MORE important than math and science are completely ignored or discounted as being worthless.

What comes out of schools and colleges are very smart people with no compassion, no heart, no problem solving ability, no critical thinking skills, no consciousness, no spirituality, and no intuition. College graduates may be smart at cutting corners.

SCHOOLS ENCOURAGE LYING, CHEATING, STEALING, ROBBING FROM NATURE AND OTHER PEOPLE

Students become very good at cheating, lying or stealing, but they have no clue what works for seven future generations, without causing harm. Ethics and morals are completely ignored, because profits must come first, no matter what. Schools churn out sociopaths who focus on making money, while destroying the world and other people, in order to get to the top of the money and power pile.

Success and happiness in US schools is defined as getting kids ready for college, period. If a student is not headed for college, then that student has to be in sports.

THE FALSE MYTH CREATED BY SPORTS MONOPOLIES, CREATING STUDENTS AS COMMODITIES

The problem is that only the top 5% of students who actually want to play a particular sport for fun do so, because it is expensive and many parents don't have the money. Out of the few kids who do manage to get onto an athletic team, only the best athletes get to play in the interschool sports games. Then only 1% of the 5% of those 'best' athletes end up playing professionally.

High school sports are really about many kids sitting on the bench while the best players compete to win at any cost, in order to be 'successful' and boost the school ranking, while boosting their chance of making big money in professional sports. But few of those kids will make it to that level, and most will learn that they are 'failures'.

Professional sports is now a huge corporate enterprise that is all about the money and propping up monopolies, rather than being healthy and sustainable. Sports injuries are common, but not focused on. Tough it out and keep playing, no matter what, seems to be the motto.

So what if kids get hurt or die while on the high school field, as three high school football students did in just the last week, all across the US. So what if the kids get brain injuries? So what if they don't know anything about finances?

CORPORATE MONOPOLIES CREATE SUPERFICIAL VIRTUAL REALITIES IN COLLEGES, WHILE IGNORING REALITY AND SUSTAINABLE SOLUTIONS

What if a particular job will cause them to become unhealthy and be at higher risk of disease or death. These fact are covered up and denied, while the pursuit of profits, power and big money is focused on exclusively.

What happens if all schools are privatized, as many people desire? Will those schools be 'owned' by corporations, who teach a certain corporate friendly world view, while ignoring or denying reality?

NOAM CHOMSKY: EDUCATION; FOR WHOM AND FOR WHAT?

"Noam Chomsky, a world-renowned linguist, intellectual and political activist, spoke at the University of Arizona on Feb. 8, 2012. His lecture, "Education: For Whom and For What?" featured a talk on the state of higher education, followed by a question-and-answer session.

Chomsky, an Institute Professor and a Professor Emeritus of Linguistics at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he worked for more than 50 years, has been concerned with a range of education-related issues in recent years. Among them: How do we characterize the contemporary state of the American education system? What happens to the quality of education when public universities become more privatized? Are public universities in danger of being converted into facilities that produce graduates-as-commodities for the job market? What is the role of activism in education? With unprecedented tuition increases and budget struggles occurring across American campuses, these are questions that are more relevant than ever."

MILITARY INFLUENCE ON EDUCATION CREATES DISTORTIONS IN SOCIETY

Much of what is taught in school comes out of a military world view that relies on conquest, takeovers, and imperial international adventures. Wars are justified by making up reasons for it, and genocide is ok, as long as it results in ownership of the property that is left over.

First Strike Policy, Nuclear Bombs, Down Winders, Acute Radiation Sickness, Nuclear War, Dirty Bombs, Bomb Shelters

The consequences of this violent, military oriented world view encourage violent actions before any other solution is even thought about. There is ZERO funding for a Dept. of Peace, but 50% to 60% of the entire US budget is sent to the Dept. of War. This movement of money and power via forced taxation from citizens to private, for profit military industrial complex generates deep distortions and myths that carry through all the way into the education system, the media system, and the government.

WHEN EDUCATION SYSTEM LOSES A MAJORITY OF STUDENTS, WHAT DOES THAT SAY?

Up to 50% of kids drop out of 'school' during high school. Another 50% of students drop out of college degree programs. The pressure to succeed in this artificial environment set up for college and the top 2%, but applied to everyone, is forcing kids out of schools, into suicide attempts and into depression or unhappiness, that just gets worse once they are out on the jobs in the corporate world.

If kids don't get an A on everything, they feel like failures. Some kids are pressured so much that they may commit suicide just because of a less than A test score. The internal pressure to get straight A's and be a winner at any cost, in all ways, is intense.

A single test score or a losing sports score may cause a teen to take their own life, just because they have set an artificially high standard for themselves that cannot be accomplished. What happens to kids who are just average? Average kids are judged as being worthless or somehow defective. Certainly the kids who are not getting straight A's must not be loved enough at home, and there must be something really wrong with them.

Kids are forced to meet standards on tests that are now nationalized. Teachers have to teach to the standards, rather than meeting the needs of the students. Kids are taught that learning is NOT FUN. Learning is hated and despised after a certain point by most kids in school by the time they reach high school. Look around in the average class room, and you don't see smiling happy faces. You will see sullen, angry, frustrated, and stressed students trying to cut corners and cheat just to make it through the win at any cost environment.

NATURE IS AN ENEMY TO BE CONQUERED, RATHER THAN WORKING IN HARMONY WITH IT

Schools no longer look or feel like what they used to 100 years ago, when kids went out on farms and picked crops, milked cows and planted seeds during the spring, summer and fall. At least back then, kids got a connection to animals, plants, and natural systems. They got to connect with living things, growing things and Nature itself.  What is left of that system is summer vacation.

CONNECTION WITH NATURE HAS DISAPPEARED FROM SCHOOLS

The connection with Nature has disappeared completely. Kids are now trapped inside boxes called classrooms, and forced to sit still for 8 hours a day, without moving at all. This system of 'learning' is more like torture, and insufferably boring. Does learning really take place in this system, or is it 'programming' kids for ulterior and other motives, such as politics, a mythical world view?

Sadly, connecting with and learning from Nature has disappeared out of the education system. School is creating kids who have no idea what Nature is all about, much less living in harmony with it. Where does food come from? How is it grown? What is sustainable and organic, compared to the opposite? What does a sustainable future look like?

Most kids have no clue what Nature is all about, how it works, much less how to work in harmony with it. Yes, these students may know theories and concepts, plus loads of scientific or logical facts learned from books, but they have zero wisdom gained from interacting with Nature or following their own intuition.

CORPORATIONS FUNDING CLIMATE CHANGE DENIAL, PLUS SCHOOLS THAT TEACH THIS CORPORATE FRIENDLY WORLD VIEW

In many cases, employers sponsor courses or curriculum and teach kids what they want them to know. Schools and colleges are in some cases more about programming kids with corporate friendly PR information, in direct opposition to a sustainable truth.

IMAGINING A DIFFERENT SYSTEM OF LEARNING

What happens if grades go away? What happens if kids are free to disagree with teachers and go in their own direction? What happens if kids refuse to learn corporate PR and go out in the woods, learning directly from Nature instead of 'teachers' and professors?

If kids are evaluating themselves via a portfolio, what happens? What happens if kids have unscheduled time to just have fun and play? What happens if kids have a RIGHT to be creative, musical or perform if they want to do that, rather than making these critically important things optional, if there is money left after science, math and politically motivate mythology courses?

What happens if kids can follow their favorite subjects such as photography, dance, science fiction, traveling around the world, learning some strange foreign language, raising animals, growing plants, or whatever it is that gives them joy and stimulates learning?

What happens if a teen burns out of school and does not want to go to school anymore? What happens if school is no longer fun and no longer creates happiness for a kid, teen or young adult? What if school becomes so stressful that it is now a burden and depressing subjects lead to less self esteem and a poor self image, rather than the opposite? Isn't America supposed to be about the pursuit of happiness?

THE NO COLLEGE TRACK

Children learn at different rates and speeds. Some learn fast. Some kids learn slowly. Some kids don't want anything to do with college, so why force them go proceed down that track, which takes many years of preparation?

Employers are having problems finding skilled trades people, such as heavy equipment operators, welders and mechanics, just to name a few. A trade school costs a small fraction of what college does, jobs are plentiful, pay is good, and they cannot be outsourced. But get advice about which occupation to train for from an employer you want to work for, not a recruiter. An apprenticeship is another option and that may mean being paid to be in training.

SCHOOLS AND COLLEGES NEED TO FOCUS ON TEACHING THE SCIENCE OF SUSTAINABLE HEALTH, NOT THE OPPOSITE

What happens if schools and colleges focused on teaching the science of sustainable health, instead of teaching what corporations want, which is that short term profits are the best and only thing that exists?

What happens if the focus in schools or colleges is on what works for seven future generations, without causing harm? If this question is asked and education is oriented in this direction, humanity has a chance of making it through the challenges ahead of it.
