WHAT IS A TROLL OR SHILL?


Wikipedia; "Shill" typically refers to someone who purposely gives onlookers the impression that they are an enthusiastic independent customer of a seller (or marketer of ideas) for whom they are secretly working. The person or group who hires the shill is using crowd psychology to encourage other onlookers or audience members to purchase the goods or services (or accept the ideas being marketed). 


Shills are often employed by professional marketing campaigns. "Plant" and "stooge" more commonly refer to any person who is secretly in league with another person or organization while pretending to be neutral or actually a part of the organization he is planted in, such as a magician's audience, a political party, or an intelligence organization (see double agent).

TROLLING AND SHILLING IS ILLEGAL IN MANY WAYS


Shilling is illegal in many circumstances and in many jurisdictions[1] because of the potential for fraud and damage; however if a shill does not place uninformed parties at a risk of loss, but merely generates "buzz," the shill's actions may be legal.

Shill can also be used pejoratively to describe a critic who appears either all-too-eager to heap glowing praise upon mediocre offerings, or who acts as an apologist for glaring flaws. In this sense, such a critic would be an indirect shill for the industry at large, because said critic's income is tied to the prosperity of the industry.

In some jurisdictions and circumstances, this type of activity may be illegal. In addition, reputable organizations may prohibit their employees and other interested parties (contractors, agents, etc.) from participating in public forums or discussion groups in which a conflict of interest might arise, or will at least insist that their employees and agents refrain from participating in any way that might create a conflict of interest. For example, the plastic surgery company Lifestyle Lift ordered their employees to post fake positive reviews on websites. As a result, they were sued, and ordered to pay $300,000 in damages by the New York Attorney General's office. Said Attorney General Andrew Cuomo: "This company’s attempt to generate business by duping consumers was cynical, manipulative, and illegal. My office has [been] and will continue to be on the forefront in protecting consumers against emerging fraud and deception, including 'astroturfing,' on the Internet."[5]

In marketing, shills are often employed to assume the air of satisfied customers and give (false) testimonials to the merits of a given product. This type of shilling is illegal in some jurisdictions but almost impossible to detect. It may be considered a form of unjust enrichment or unfair competition, as in California's Business and Professions Code § 17200, which prohibits any "unfair or fraudulent business act or practice and unfair, deceptive, untrue or misleading advertising.""

What if you say the 'wrong' things online today? The government is employing people to watch postings and websites for 'misinformation'. Unless that term is defined, it could lead the supposed protective government to create all kinds of mischief online, including censoring comments, or worse.

What is misinformation anyway? What if huge corporations control government, and they want only positive information about their industry to out, any opposing or dissenting information is then labeled 'misinformation' and attacked or 'corrected'. The government employees then could become little more than corporate shills, promoting a certain point of view, even if it is not supported by facts or evidence.

COULD TROLLS POST WHEN NO ONE ELSE IS, HOPING TO GET IN THE 'LAST WORD'?

Could it be that one of the tactics used by trolls and shills is to come in after hours, when no one else is posting? Could it be that they hope to get the upper hand and win debates, by coming in after everyone else is 'done' posting in a thread, and filling it up with pro nuclear dogma? The fact that no one posts anything after that, because they are all busy on the 'newer' and fresher threads, may give the appearance that their posts are 'facts' not disputed by anyone else. Is it possible that a pro nuclear troll or shill can turn a particular site into one that is favorable to and supportive of their specific point of view?

Could these very odd posting times and a high frequency of posting make it much easier to win a debate when no one is up or around? Might this tactic of early morning or very late night postings make it much easier to claim victory and slant any group to a particular viewpoint, when a particular poster fills a thread with pro nuclear dogma and no one challenges any of the posts?

They combine all of these things as one of their techniques to silence any dissent to their deceptive claims. After all, nuclear scientists are GOD, correct? Anyone who disagrees or reasonably debates with a flamer, shill or troll usually ends up being called names. Even reasonable debating points or points of view are dismissed and the person is called names or given labels that are derogatory in nature, especially in cases where they know that they have lost the debate, and have nothing left to come back with. It helps to have a thick skin and take the high road, if these types are not banned or thrown out of a forum.

Exhibit A – Rules for disinformation #8. Invoke authority. Claim for yourself or associate yourself with authority and present your argument with enough 'jargon' and 'minutia' to illustrate you are 'one who knows', and simply say it isn't so without discussing issues or demonstrating concretely why or citing sources.

Exhibit B – Rules for disinformation #19. Ignore proof presented, demand impossible proofs. This is perhaps a variant of the 'play dumb' rule. Regardless of what material may be presented by an opponent in public forums, claim the material irrelevant and demand proof that is impossible for the opponent to come by (it may exist, but not be at his disposal, or it may be something which is known to be safely destroyed or withheld, such as a murder weapon.) 

In order to completely avoid discussing issues, it may be required that you to categorically deny and be critical of media or books as valid sources, deny that witnesses are acceptable, or even deny that statements made by government or other authorities have any meaning or relevance.

The Sad Truths of Internet Trolls:

1. Trolls are immune to criticism and logical arguments. True trolls cannot be reasoned with, regardless of how sound your logical argument is.

2. Trolls do not feel remorse like you and me. They have sociopathic tendencies, and accordingly, they delight in other people having hurt feelings.

3. Trolls consider themselves separate from the social order.

4. Trolls do not abide by etiquette or the rules of common courtesy.

5. Trolls consider themselves above social responsibility.

6. Trolls gain energy by you insulting them.

7. Trolls gain energy when you get angry.

8. The only way to deal with a troll is to ignore him, or take away his ability to post online.

Internet trolls seek to be disruptive and hurtful by using any of the following techniques:

1. Trolls will post abusive and hurtful comments directed at a specific person (aka "1.flaming" another person)

2. Trolls will incite broad arguments and provoke angry responses by making controversial statements.

3. Trolls will narcissistically dominate conversations, trying to make themselves the center of attention. (e.g. nonstop comments about themselves and their accomplishments; repeated self-centered statements and bragging)

You cannot win with a troll. Publicly retaliating against them just fuels their childish need for attention. There are only 3 reliable ways to deal with trolls, all of which focus on removing their audience, removing their power, and depriving them of the attention they seek.

Completely ignore the person's postings. While it is difficult for most users to let a troll have the last word, this tactic successfully takes the wind out of a casual troll's sails."

Bottom line, just ask the moderator to remove them, flag their post as abusive, and/or ignore them."

6. We were ready to have the enenews community and other truth tellers correct us so we can go back to work telling the truth in all ways possible.

7. We humbly asked our truth tellers here to help keep us on track.

8. We made a list of the radioactive releases that negatively affected people. We also made a list of anti nuclear activists we harmed, and vowed to help them in more effective ways with on topic anti nuclear arguments…excellent links, and creative anti nuclear activism.

9. We made direct amends (to those we lied to) except when to do so would support the shills and trolls or confuse the newcomers.

10 We continue with personal inventory and when we were off topic, promptly admitted it.

11. We sought through concentration, study and practice to strengthen connection to the community of support on enenews and elsewhere so we have the wisdom and courage to spread the truth, debunk lies and make change for the better on this planet.

12. We carry this message to others and practice these (anti nuclear truth telling) principals here.

What is the takeaway? Take on the flamers, trolls and shills who are trying to keep you quiet by attacking you personally. Do not be discouraged by online or real world pro nuclear 'trolls'. They are trying to make you give up, go away, stay quiet and/or convince you that the pro nuclear cult of death that is promoting and actually making Armageddon happen is right, just and true, when it is everything but that. Their primary goal is to get you to go into fear mode, shut up, go away and let them win. 

These pro monopoly trolls (mostly paid, but sometimes not) want to convince you, that you are just a know nothing average citizen from nowhere. They want to make you believe that you have nothing of value to offer the world and that in all ways you are worse than them in oh so many ways, which they are happy to go on and on and on about, often using four letter words.

They want you to act and feel worthless. Their goal is to get you to believe that you are better off just staying home, being quiet, doing nothing, saying nothing, not voting, and letting them do whatever they want, because they 'know better' than you. Many people are easily intimidated or threatened, and then go into denial, fear mode or shut down when confronted or attacked by flamers, trolls or shills. Don't be one of those people.

Consider this kind of situation as a call to arms. Gird yourself with the sword of truth, put on the armor of patience and go into battle, using truth, patience and long suffering as just a few of your weapons of 'war'.

Instead of giving up, staying quiet and staying home while not saying anything, speak up, speak out, and make a difference. Sharpen your sword of truth by debating with these trolls online or in person. Each time you do this, you will become more powerful. Truth can cut through deception like a hot knife through butter.

NEVER GIVE UP, NEVER GIVE IN


Never give up and never give in to a flamer, troll, either online or in the 'real' world of your global community. Common sense, caring, compassion, intuition and street smarts are your strength, and they can never win as long as you hold on to these things. Pray, meditate, talk with others around you for support and encouragement, but don't give up. Bullies and/or criminals cannot be allowed to win, or what kind of world will we end up with in the longer term? 

Remember too, that a lie will travel halfway around the world, before the truth even gets out the door. This means that you have to travel the path less traveled in order to stay with the truth and expose the lies. You may lose supposed 'friends' and family members when going down the path less traveled, but hopefully not. Those few who may join you later are true friends, who you can count on. 

Sadly, many people believe the lies and pro nuclear propaganda, because that is just about all that is presented via the pro nuclear mass media, scientists, most doctors and researchers. So you are in good company with people like Emerson, who said;
