Can you imagine a car that powers itself just by sitting in the sun? Well, that day may have arrived. This Ford CMAX Solar Energi Hybrid Concept by FORD is an electric car that charges it's batteries via solar panels on the roof. 

Because those panels by themselves are not enough to recharge the batteries if the car is used on a daily basis, it uses fresnel concentrator lenses that are built into the car port structure that is designed to go with the vehicle. 

CAR CARRIES AROUND IT'S OWN SOLAR CHARGING SYSTEM

As the vehicle sits under the car port, the sun shines on the lenses. The very low cost lenses then concentrate the sunlight and multiply the power available on the more expensive solar cells built into the roof of the car. The car automatically adjusts its position so that it stays under the lenses. The end result is a car that is powered 100% by the sun, without any need to plug in for recharging.

Of course, this same scenario would work for any vehicle. It would also work for any solar panel anywhere. Cheap mirrors and/or fresnel lenses can concentrate sunlight onto solar panels, reducing their cost, while improving their efficiency. 

PLUG CAR IN AND IT CAN BECOME A GRID STORAGE DEVICE AND MAKE MONEY BY RUNNING METER BACKWARDS

If the car is plugged in and not used for a week or longer, this setup has the capacity to send power into the grid, while also acting as a grid energy storage device. This may be the first vehicle that can actually make money for the owner via energy sales to the grid, while just sitting there.

Who wouldn't like to own or lease a vehicle that actually creates energy and makes a person money, while just sitting in the sun?

The car above was built by students, and they claim that this vehicle is so well engineered and efficient, that it can charge itself up just by sitting in the sun for 10 hours, from a complete depletion of the battery. It can then drive 500 km on a full charge.

Imagine driving this car to work, and using maybe 5% to 10% of the total charge. It then sits in the sun and recharges completely in a matter of an hour or two, just sitting there. So even in cloudy weather, it would never lose it's charge and never need to be plugged in for the average commuter who travels only 20 km one way to work. If the vehicle is plugged in at work or home, it will actually serve as a way to make money by using the battery as both a grid energy storage device, and also as a way to run an electric meter backwards. Imagine millions of these cars plugged into the grid at any given time, with a portion of that electricity available to smooth out the peak use, highest cost periods.

Imagine a car running on hydrogen, via a fuel cell. The fuel cell collects and stores hydrogen fuel via the solar cells built into the skin of the car. Electricity gathered by the car's solar cells are used to split water into hydrogen. The oxygen is released. The collected hydrogen is then stored and used as needed later on, to fuel the engine, or to power a fuel cell that powers electric motors. The hydrogen powered engine or fuel cell is used to move the car when the batteries are not enough to take the vehicle where it needs to go on long trips or when it is rainy or stormy outside.
