As usual, the only way a person can get the real story is via citizen reporters, because the local and national mass media news service are either not there, or they are denying anything bad happened. The mass media these days seems to hire 'journalists' who do nothing more then read the corporate PR spin that is handed to them, without even checking to see if it is even true.

Health Effects Associated with Uranium Hexafluoride (UF6)

Uranium hexafluoride and related compounds have radiological and chemical characteristics that pose potential health risks.

Radiation Effects

The characteristics of UF6 pose potential health risks, and the material is handled accordingly. Uranium is radioactive and decays into a series of other radioactive elements.

Chemical Effects

In addition, if UF6 is released to the atmosphere, the uranium compounds and HF that are formed by reaction with moisture in the air can be chemically toxic. Uranium is a heavy metal that, in addition to being radioactive, can have toxic chemical effects (primarily on the kidneys) if it enters the bloodstream by means of ingestion or inhalation. HF is an extremely corrosive gas that can damage the lungs and cause death if inhaled at high enough concentrations.

The potential health risks associated with uranium compounds and HF are discussed in further detail in Chapter 4 of the PEIS."

A colorless volatile white crystalline solid. Highly toxic and corrosive. Radioactive. Emits high energy rays which may be harmful and are detectable only by special instruments. Chemically irritates skin, eyes and mucous membranes. Used to make fuel for nuclear power plants.

RADIOACTIVE AND POISON GAS UF6, BREAKS DOWN TO HYROFLOURIC ACID AND URANYL FLOURIDE


Via Nick November 17, 2014 "When exposed to water vapor, UF6 breaks down into hydrofluoric acid (HF) and uranyl fluoride (UO2F2), both of which are highly toxic. UF6 emits alpha, beta and gamma radiation, but radiation damage has not been observed in people who have been exposed. Instead: “At high concentrations, death from HF-induced pulmonary edema is observed. Severe ocular injury; skin burns; and ocular, mucous membrane, and respiratory irritation are also attributable to HF. Kidney damage attributable to UO2F2, was also suggested from urinalysis data.”

In the first month, the poison radioactive gas venting was classifed as uranium hexaflouride, but as of November, both the NRC and the mass media is now call the poison gas leak as hydrogen flouride. They don't explain how and why UF6 breaks down with exposure to water or water vapor from one thing into another.

In addition, despite an obvious cloud of poison gas wafting out of the plant, with no water spray turned on, the NRC classified this as being within 'legal' emissions limits. In other words, this venting was not even reportable, and no one needed to be warned.

HYDROGEN FLOURIDE HEALTH EFFECTS

Health Effects
Hydrogen fluoride is irritating to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes, and inhalation may cause respiratory irritation or hemorrhage. Systemic effects can occur from all routes of exposure and may include nausea, vomiting, gastric pain, or cardiac arrhythmia. Symptoms may be delayed for several days, especially in the case of exposure to dilute solutions of hydrogen fluoride (less than 20%).

Hydrofluoric acid is corrosive and also causes destruction of deep tissues when fluoride ions penetrate the skin. Absorption of substantial amounts of hydrogen fluoride by any route may be fatal.

The systemic effects of hydrogen fluoride are due to increased fluoride concentrations in the body which can change the levels of calcium, magnesium, and potassium in the blood.

Hypocalcemia can cause tetany, decreased myocardial contractility, and possible cardiovascular collapse while hyperkalemia has been suggested to cause ventricular fibrillation leading to death.


HONEYWELL HAS BEEN FINED FOR A NUMBER OF OTHER LEAKS SINCE 2008


Via Nick November 17, 2014 "Last month's incident was the fourth leak that caused hydrogen fluoride to be released from the plant since 2008. The Illinois Attorney General ordered Honeywell in December to pay a $90,000 civil penalty for the three prior leaks."

How much should Honeywell pay this time?

Of course, no one was warned, no one was advised to go in for health checkups, and no one was told about the release or what to watch for as far as health effects, because that is what happens around anything to do with the nuclear industry. Everyone is on their own.

Want to bet this 'accident' will be covered up just like all of the other ones? Watch for words like 'harmless', contained, managed, etc. This is not the first massive release of DUF6, and it will not be the last one.

"On August 1, 2014 at midnight, the contract between the United Steel Workers of America (USW) Local 7-669 and the Honeywell Specialty Materials Metropolis Works Facility expired. Honeywell management has locked out the union workers until a contract is ratified. The plant continues to operate normally. Honeywell has staffed its operating crews with qualified replacement workers, augmented with additional supervisors to increase crew operating experience. Security and health physics personnel at the facility are not affected by the lockout. "

Protest the PIGS October 28, 2014 "Check out these facts about Metropolis. Honeywell indicted on 3-11-2011 Metropolis is still known for its Uranium Processing Plant. Forty-two former employees have died from cancer caused by radiation, and the US government has paid out $15.2 million to workers who were exposed between 1959 and 1976—around the same time Metropolis was planning the Amazing World of Superman. In 2011, the operator of the plant pled guilty to releasing radioactive mud throughout the town.

According to the US Department of Justice:

Honeywell was charged with one count of violating RCRA {42 U.S.C. 6925 {permit violation – knowingly storing hazardous waste without a permit}.

2010 Huffpost: "Local community members are claiming that Honeywell is also not properly reporting safety violations at the nuclear facility in Metropolis. A recent report by Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC) says Honeywell has failed to notify the NRC of 37 reportable unplanned, uranium contamination events at its Metropolis facility between January 2008 and January 2010."
