Most of his family was Zionist and he grew up in a military based home, his father was in a high position in the Israeli military. His grandmother was an Auschwitz survivor.  

The talk by Eran Efrati was filmed in Denver, Colorado on March 3, 2014 and his U.S. tour with Maya Wind. Eran talk about his experiences in the IDF and then more broadly discusses Israel, its relationship to the U.S. and the global expansion of militarism.

Eran Efrati, 28, was born and raised in Jerusalem. After graduating high school he enlisted in the IDF, where he served as a combat soldier and company sergeant in Battalion 50 of the Nachal Division. He spent most of his service in Hebron and throughout the West Bank. In 2009, he was discharged and joined Breaking the Silence, an organization of veteran Israeli soldiers working to raise awareness about the daily reality in the Occupied Territories. 

He worked as the chief investigator of the organization, collecting testimonies from IDF soldiers about their activities. He also guided political tours and to the West Bank and worked to educate Israeli youth about the reality of being a soldier in an occupying army. His collected testimonies appear in the booklet "Operation Cast Lead" and their most recent release "Our Harsh Logic". Since leaving Breaking the Silence, his investigative reports appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Guardian. Maybe, maybe not, because historically, both 'sides' can claim 'victory' or blame the other side for starting whatever war, or a genocide, by going back thousands of years and diving into ancient history. Any one of these conflicts can justify a present day Hatfields versus McCoys type never ending revenge motivated war and/or genocide. Just read the Old Testament about each side wiping out the other side, multiple times.

Daily Show And Hillary Clinton; at the end she talks about how fear is the underlying motive the prevents peace. No one trusts anyone else. For lack of trust and over riding fears, plus generations of violence going back thousands of years, war continues. Clinton also describes how an Irish peace was negotiated, even after 800 years of war. 

SUMMARY

The state of peace that was gained after 800 years of war between the Catholics and the Protestants is a rough equivalent to the Middle East conflict. That example and the example of how South Africa got rid of Apartheid via international support and pressure provides both concrete examples and hope that peace can be accomplished, especially if both sides are willing to move beyond their fears and trust the lasting peace that results from a lack of hating another.
