The Hidden And Unknown Story Of The Battle Between David And Goliath

DAVID AND GOLIATH IS A VERY ANCIENT STORY

The story of Goliath versus David is a famous and very well known ancient and very old story. This story is told in various religions. It has also been told historically going all the way back to the ancient Greeks, using different names. There are also a number of different ways of getting value out of this story, which this article will explore after telling the story from a number of perspectives.

The Islamic, Jewish and Christian traditions all know this story by the name of David versus Goliath.

Malcolm Gladwell: The unheard story of David and Goliath

After telling the story, he ends saying that the moral of the story being that the giants or monopolies in the world who are like Goliath are not as big and powerful as they may seem. What most people don't understand is that the source of their greatest strength is also at the same time their greatest weakness. And sometimes, these giants don't even see that the seemingly weak and vulnerable shepard boys have a sling in their pocket and rocks in their hands.

BIBLICAL VERSION OF STORY

Goliath (Hebrew: גָּלְיָת, Modern Golyat Tiberian Golyāṯ;Arabic: جالوت, Ǧālūt (Qur'anic term), جليات Ǧulyāt (Christian term)) or Goliath of Gath (one of five city states of the Philistines) is a giant Philistine warrior defeated by the young David, the future king of Israel, in the Bible's Books of Samuel (1 Samuel 17).

The account of the battle between David and Goliath is told in 1 Samuel, chapter 17.[3] Saul and the Israelites are facing the Philistines near the Valley of Elah. Twice a day for 40 days, Goliath, the champion of the Philistines, comes out between the lines and challenges the Israelites to send out a champion of their own to decide the outcome in single combat, but Saul and all the Israelites are afraid. David, bringing food for his elder brothers, hears that Saul has promised to reward any man who defeats Goliath, and accepts the challenge. Saul reluctantly agrees and offers his armor, which David declines, taking only his sling and five stones from a brook.

David and Goliath confront each other, Goliath with his armor and shield, David with his staff and sling. "The Philistine cursed David by his gods." but David replies: "This day Jehovah will deliver you into my hand, and I will strike you down; and I will give the dead bodies of the host of the Philistines this day to the birds of the air and to the wild beasts of the earth; that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel, and that all this assembly may know that God saves not with sword and spear; for the battle is God’s, and he will give you into our hand.[4]

David hurls a stone from his sling with all his might and hits Goliath in the center of his forehead, Goliath falls on his face to the ground, and David cuts off his head. The Philistines flee and are pursued by the Israelites "as far as Gath and the gates of Ekron". David puts the armor of Goliath in his own tent and takes the head to Jerusalem, and Saul sends Abner to bring the boy to him. The king asks whose son he is, and David answers, "I am the son of your servant Jesse the Bethlehemite."

Textual history

The earliest manuscripts, such as the fourth-century AD Codex Vaticanus Graecus 1209 do not contain the verses describing David coming each day with food for his brothers, nor 1 Samuel 17:55–58 in which Saul seems unaware of David’s identity, referring to him as "this youth" and asking Abner to find out the name of his father. The narrative therefore reads that Goliath challenges the Israelites to combat, the Israelites are afraid, and David, already with Saul, accepts the challenge.[5] This removes a number of ambiguities which have puzzled commentators: it removes 1 Samuel 17:55–58 in which Saul seems not to know David, despite having taken him as his shield-bearer and harpist; it removes 1 Samuel 17:50, the presence of which makes it seem as if David kills Goliath twice, once with his sling and then again with a sword;[6] and it gives David a clear reason, as Saul’s personal shield-bearer, for accepting Goliath’s challenge. Scholars drawing on studies of oral transmission and folklore have concluded that the non-Septuagint material “is a folktale grafted onto the initial text of … 1 Samuel.”[7]

Goliath's height

Goliath's stature grew at the hand of narrators or scribes: the oldest manuscripts — the Dead Sea Scrollstext of Samuel, the 1st century historian Josephus, and the 4th century Septuagint manuscripts — all give his height as "four cubits and a span" (6 feet 9 inches or 2.06 metres); later manuscripts increase this to "six cubits and a span" (9 feet 9 inches or 2.97 metres).[1]

Goliath's injury and fall

The biblical account describes Goliath as falling on his face after he is struck by a stone that sank into his forehead. British rabbi Jonathan Magonet has discussed some of the textual difficulties this raises.[8] In the first place, he notes that archaeological information suggests that Philistine helmets generally had a forehead covering, in some cases extending down to the nose. Why (he asks) should David aim at such an impenetrable spot (and how did it hit with such force to penetrate thick bone)? And why should Goliath fall forward when struck by something heavy enough to stop him, rather than backwards? An answer to both questions, Magonet suggests, lies in the Hebrew word meitzach, normally translated forehead. A word almost identical with it appears earlier in the passage — the word mitzchat, translated as "greaves" — the flexible leg-armour that protected Goliath's lower leg (see I Samuel 17: 6). It is possible, grammatically in the passage, for the same word to be used in verse 49, a reconstruction of which, replacing meitzach with mitzchat, would imply that the stone sank down behind Goliath's leg-armour (as his leg was bent), making it impossible for him to straighten his leg, and causing him to stumble and fall. Then David removed the head of Goliath to show all that the giant was killed.

Elhanan and Goliath

A Goliath makes another appearance in 2 Samuel 21:19, which tells how Goliath the Gittite was killed by “Elhanan the son of Jaare-oregim, the Bethlehemite.” The fourth-century B.C. 1 Chronicles explains the second Goliath by saying that Elhanan "slew Lahmi the brother of Goliath", apparently constructing the name Lahmi from the last portion of the word "Bethlehemite" ("beit-ha’lahmi").[9] The King James Bible translators adopted this into their translation of 2 Samuel 21:18–19, although the Hebrew text at this point makes no mention of the word "brother". "Most likely, storytellers displaced the deed from the otherwise obscure Elhanan onto the more famous character, David."[10]

Goliath and the Philistines

Tell es-Safi, the biblical Gath and traditional home of Goliath, has been the subject of extensive excavations by Israel’s Bar-Ilan University. The archaeologists have established that this was one of the largest of the Philistine cities until destroyed in the ninth century BC, an event from which it never recovered. A potsherd discovered at the site, and reliably dated to the tenth to mid-ninth centuries BC, is inscribed with the two names “alwt” and “wlt.” While the names are not directly connected with the biblical Goliath, they are etymologically related and demonstrate that the name fits with the context of late-tenth/early-ninth-century BC Philistine culture.

The name “Goliath” itself is non-Semitic and has been linked with the Lydian king Alyattes, which also fits the Philistine context of the biblical Goliath story.[11] A similar name, Uliat, is also attested in Carian inscriptions[12] Aren Maeir, director of the excavation, comments: "Here we have very nice evidence [that] the name Goliath appearing in the Bible in the context of the story of David and Goliath … is not some later literary creation."[13]

Goliath and Saul

David Presents the Head of Goliath to King Saul, 1627, Rembrandt

The underlying purpose of the story of Goliath is to show that Saul is not fit to be king (and that David is). Saul was chosen to lead the Israelites against their enemies, but when faced with Goliath he refuses to do so; Goliath is a giant, and Saul is a very tall man.

His exact height is not given, but he's a head taller than anyone else in all Israel [1 Samuel 9:2]) which implies he was over 6-feet-tall (1.83 m); and Saul's armour and weaponry are apparently no worse than Goliath's (and David, of course, refuses Saul's armour in any case). "David declares that when a lion or bear came and attacked his father's sheep, he battled against it and killed it, [but Saul] has been cowering in fear instead of rising up and attacking the threat to his sheep (i.e. Israel)."[1]

GREEK VERSION OF STORY IN ILLIAD

The armor described in 1 Samuel 17 is typical of Greek armor of the sixth century BC rather than of Philistines armor of the tenth century, and narrative formula such as the settlement of battle by single combat between champions is characteristic of the Homeric epics (the Iliad) but not of the ancient Near East. The designation of Goliath as a איש הביניים, "man of the in-between" (a longstanding difficulty in translating 1 Samuel 17) appears to be a borrowing from Greek "man of the metaikhmion (μεταίχμιον)", i.e. the space between two opposite army camps where champion combat would take place.[14]

A story very similar to that of David and Goliath appears in the Iliad, where the young Nestor fights and conquers the giant Ereuthalion.[15] Each giant wields a distinctive weapon—an iron club in Ereuthalion’s case, a massive bronze spear in Goliath’s; each giant, clad in armor, comes out of the enemy’s massed array to challenge all the warriors in the opposing army; in each case the seasoned warriors are afraid, and the challenge is taken up by a stripling, the youngest in his family (Nestor is the twelfth son of Neleus, David the seventh or eighth son of Jesse).

In each case an older and more experienced father figure (Nestor’s own father, David’s patron Saul) tells the boy that he is too young and inexperienced, but in each case the young hero receives divine aid and the giant is left sprawling on the ground.

Nestor, fighting on foot, then takes the chariot of his enemy, while David, on foot, takes the sword of Goliath. The enemy army then flees, the victors pursue and slaughter them and return with their bodies, and the boy-hero is acclaimed by the people.[16]

JEWISH VERSION OF STORY

According to the Babylonian Talmud (Sotah 42b) Goliath was a son of Orpah, the sister-in-law of Ruth, David's own great grandmother (Ruth → Obed → Jesse → David). Ruth Rabbah, a haggadic and homiletic interpretation of the Book of Ruth, makes the blood-relationship even closer, considering Orpah and Ruth to have been full sisters. Orpah was said to have made a pretense of accompanying Ruth but after forty paces left her. Thereafter she led a dissolute life. According to the Jerusalem Talmud Goliath was born by polyspermy, and had about one hundred fathers.[17]

The Talmud stresses the thrasonical Goliath's ungodliness: his taunts before the Israelites included the boast that it was he who had captured the Ark of the Covenant and brought it to the temple of Dagon; and his challenges to combat were made at morning and evening in order to disturb the Israelites in their prayers. His armour weighed 60 tons, according to rabbi Hanina; 120, according to rabbi Abba bar Kahana; and his sword, which became the sword of David, had marvellous powers. On his death it was found that his heart carried the image of Dagon, who thereby also came to a shameful downfall.[18]

In Pseudo-Philo, believed to have been composed between 135 BCE. and 70 CE, David picks up seven stones and writes on them the names of his fathers, his own name, and the name of God, one name per stone; then, speaking to Goliath, he says "Hear this word before you die: were not the two woman from whom you and I were born, sisters? And your mother was Orpah and my mother Ruth ..." After David strikes Goliath with the stone he runs to Goliath before he dies and Goliath says "Hurry and kill me and rejoice." and David replies "Before you die, open your eyes and see your slayer." Goliath sees an angel and tells David that it is not he who has killed him but the angel. Pseudo-Philo then goes on to say that the angel of the Lord changes David's appearance so that no one recognizes him, and thus Saul asks who he is.[19]

ISLAMIC VERSION OF STORY

Goliath appears in chapter 2 of the Qur'an (II: 247-252), in the narrative of David and Saul's battle against the Philistines.[20] Called "Jalut" in Arabic, Goliath's mention in the Qur'an is concise, though it remains a parallel to the account in the Hebrew Bible. Muslim scholars have tried to trace Goliath's origins, most commonly with the Amalekites.[21] Goliath, in early scholarly tradition, became a kind of byword or collective name for the oppressors of the Israelite nation before David.[20] Muslim tradition sees the battle with the Philistines as a prefiguration of Muhammad's battle of Badr, and sees Goliath as parallel to the enemies that the Prophet faced.[21]"

MODERN TECHNOLOGICAL INTERPRETATION

An Army of Davids

In his book entitled 'An Army Of Davids', "Reynolds divides the book into two distinct sections. The first focuses on trends currently taking place. The latter describes upcoming trends.[3]

He begins by recalling the process brewing his own beer earlier in his life. His grandfather had engaged in home-brewing as a bootleggerduring Prohibition, and Reynolds began to do likewise because he considered ordinary commercial beer inoffensive and unsatisfying. He writes that "the point is that I was making something for myself, to suit me." He suggests that home-brewing resulted in increased competition, and commercial beer therefore improved. Reynolds then recounts making indie music in the mid-1990s; one of his albums held the number one spot on music website MP3.com for several weeks. When he started a smallindie record company with his brother, he says, it "didn't make us rich, but... [i]t made us happy."[4]

Reynolds describes setting up his own blog as 'Instapundit' in the summer of 2001. He expresses his surprise at its growing popularity over the next several years, and points out that he receives more reader e-mail about the blog per day then the Rocky Mountain News does per week. Reynolds explains that "people were unhappy with the mass-market journalistic product and wanted to try making something of their own."[4]

Reynolds sets up his thesis of "the triumph of personal technology over mass technology," as exemplified by those trends. Using the Biblical metaphor of David versus Goliath, he maintains that over the past three centuries social organizations—from governments to businesses and beyond—had to be 'Big' ("Goliath") to survive. Yet the past realities of economies of scale andeconomies of scope, Reynolds writes, have changed in the information age so that now small organizations and individuals ("David") can compete on a level playing field.[4]

He argues that for most of human history, from about 10,000 BC to the Industrial Revolution, social organizations tended to be spontaneous and fickle, with no technology that a caveman "couldn't figure out in a few minutes." Big conceptual ideas such as the Pyramids, he writes, could only be realized with great cost and upheaval. He states that the Industrial Revolution created a paradigm of "big organizations doing big things", using innovations such as labor specialization, that lasted until the end of the 1900s.[5] (The Goliath)

Reynolds quotes William Gibson's famous remark, "The future has arrived, it's just not evenly distributed." He refers to Moore's Law about ever-increasing computing power, and he writes that the "minimum efficient scale of production" has changed. Thus, some people and small groups with access to new technology can produce at the same level as big groups and possibly achieve better results.[5] (David using the stone of technology to slay Goliath)

Reynolds titles a chapter 'Small Is the New Big'. He discusses the rise of "armchair workers" (through companies such as eBay), doing work at home—as well as specialty-based cottage industries such as Coffin's Shoes in Knoxville, TN. He argues that future trends will create a mosaic of co-existing big box retailers, local firms, and businesses run from home.[6]

Reynolds writes, "where before journalists and pundits could bloviate at leisure, offering illogical analysis or citing 'facts' that were in fact false, now the Sunday morning op-eds have already been dissected on Saturday night, within hours of their appearing on newspapers' websites." He states that the internet has redistributed access to information from professional journalists acting as media gatekeepers to millions of ordinary people in the blogosphere and elsewhere. He remarks, "many unknowns can do it better than the lords of the profession."[7] He gives some tips on successful blogging as well.[3]

He devotes a chapter to discussing what he views as a possible upcoming 'singularity'. He states that individuals will sometime soon "possess powers once thought available only to nation-states, super-heroes, or gods." He argues that human beings will gain new abilities through technology such as regenerative limbs and underwater breathing, and he views these as closely analogous to past types of body modification such as pacemakers and steroid treatments. Reynolds writes that people will become accustomed to such singularity-based changes in the same way drivers of fast moving cars become accustomed to their views of the road.[10]

MODERN DAY UNIVERSAL MEANING

The David versus Goliath story can be be thought of as representing the universal forces of man against impersonal machines, man against a regime that is oppressive or corrupt. The story can also mean courage in the face of overwhelming odds, and/or being willing to sacrifice in the name of future generations, for the greater good, on behalf of humanity, human rights, freedom, and more.

The story also represents the use of non violent peaceful methods against overwhelming violence, force and threats of death. A picture can speak thousands of words. This picture of one person standing against a whole line of tanks with overwhelming firepower, brute strength and harder to slay than even giants like Goliath, represents how one person can stand with nothing but the truth against a vast system of corporate and/or political lies, deceptions and cover ups.

How To Form A Sacred Circle Study Group
http://agreenroad.blogspot.com/2014/07/how-to-form-sacred-circle-study-group.html

THE DAVID WITHIN US

The David archetype is inside of everyone. There is no one that does not have a light David and a dark Goliath side inside of them. Anyone who is human has a dark and a light side. The words used to describe the two sides may change and differ, but they are always there. Light/dark, conscious/unconscious, awareness/denial, sleep/wake and many other words can describe the different and opposite 'sides' inside.

This is also a subject worth discussing in greater depth, such as religions as outer representations of these inner states of being.

What are all of the opposites states of awareness and feelings inside of us? What are all of the opposites outside? How can they be integrated and made into one greater whole?

THE STORY OF DAVID AND GOLIATH AND DOUBLETHINK

As a person travels down A Green Road, there is often a seeming battle, between good and 'dark or evil' thoughts and emotions inside. The choice is; does a person fight these thoughts and emotions and thereby become more and more consumed by them? In other words, how much is a person feeding the dark side inside? The following story illustrates how and why this battle plays out inside of people, and why most people are caught in this battle between two sides, (dark and light). In the world, one way that this battle shows up in people is called doublethink.

Doublethink In History And Present Day
http://agreenroad.blogspot.com/2014/08/doublethink-in-history-and-present-day.html

DON'T GET STUCK IN DENIAL OR ISOLATION

Another aspect of this story, is that most people want to fit into the group, and seem 'normal'. So those on the side of Goliath, just want to seem just like everyone else. If the group thinks or believes a certain way, then that is 'normal'. Even if Goliath is killing millions of people for no sane or logical reason, those stuck in normalcy bias, will join in and do the same.
But taken to extremes, feeding the 'normalcy' dark side can also result in something potentially very terrible happening, such as getting stuck in denial or ending up isolated and alone.
Another way that the struggle between David and Goliath shows up is in a way that is called the normalcy bias or cognitive dissonance.
A person ideally responds in the present moment, and does not get stuck in the past or the future.
Wanting to be 'normal' can also mean getting stuck in denial and not seeing reality as it really is, which means that a person cannot respond in a healthy, light illuminated way.

THE BATTLE BETWEEN DARK AND LIGHT OUT IN THE WORLD

There is also the battle between people feeding their light side and people who are feeding their dark side outside, in the world. It helps to recognize what it looks like, when someone is feeding their dark side inside of themselves, and how that shows up in the outer world.

IS THERE AN END TO THIS BATTLE?

There is a seemingly endless battle between the darkness and the light in our minds and emotions. These battles waged in mind and via the thoughts plus emotions are endlessly restless, like the waves in the ocean. But the deeper one goes down into the ocean, the more still and quiet it becomes. And the same is true of the air. Close to the ground, the air is restless and constantly moving. But the higher up one goes, the more still and quiet the air becomes.

Can we go to this same place, where everything is quiet and still and the dark and light sides within quit fighting? The answer is yes.

Mind often thinks it is in control, when actually, it is all just a grand illusion, created by the same mind that creates this black and white duality and all of the inner and outer friction/strife that results from this. Bottom line, there is only A Green Road, nothing else... Travelers on A Green Road learn to let go and surrender, totally and completely, thus eliminating all friction and duality. Learning to travel the middle way, down a paradoxical and mysterious Green Road, is a noble effort and worth doing.

ARE YOU READY TO INTEGRATE THE TWO SIDES, AND BUILD A GREEN ROAD FOR OTHERS TO FOLLOW?

To build or follow A Green Road, step out of mind, step out of thoughts. How is this done? It is easy...just stop. Realize and stay in the awareness that pure consciousness is actually who we are. Who we are is not about thinking, ego or mind at all. We are NOT our thoughts. Stop the battle. Give it up, give it all up. Surrender to your true Self, which is beyond all duality and mind thoughts.

The process of traveling down A Green Road is much like walking on the sharp end of a sword. A Green Road is narrow, and only a few find A Green Road. Although many are invited, few choose to accept the invitation and travel down this road. This is not a religion, but it can work within any religion or belief system, to gain even deeper insights and to draw out the deeper meanings and truths.

Traveling down A Green Road consists in part, the art of pure BEING, with no thought, while also learning and growing in awareness, often through exploring and learning truth or becoming more aware of the many mysteries of life, while also learning how Nature's laws work on many levels. There is no end to this Green Road.

Travelers on a Green Road stay open, curious and ask questions such as; Who am I, and Who am I NOT? What are Nature's laws, and how do they work? What are the spiritual laws, and how do they work?

See how long you can stay in a non thought, non duality awareness. See if you can deepen it by meditating, or by focusing on what your heart is feeling at any given moment, as one example. Build and explore your inner Green Road by just 'watching' your thoughts as if they are clouds in the sky, either from above or below, by looking up. At the same time, learn the science of sustainable health, so that your actions do not harm seven future generations of your children.

As you travel down A Green Road, watch for the empty spaces in between thoughts, and ask the question; 'Who am I", and; "Who am I NOT"? Keep bringing the awareness to the spaces between thoughts, and see how those spaces grow, become larger and the clouds of 'thoughts' slowly dissipate. One definition of enlightenment is to have no thoughts for 30 minutes. Of course, this state of awareness is not something that is easy to accomplish.

Like any worthwhile goal, it takes inner practice, discipline, and daily repetition to work towards this, but it can be accomplished. So what if it takes one lifetime to accomplish? What if it takes even more than one? Isn't it worth it to be able to leave the cave of duality and suffering, in order to live out in the sunlight of pure consciousness and bliss?

By contrasting who we are NOT, with who we ARE, while also paying attention to what our heart is feeling, we may very well gain clarity, wisdom and grow in consciousness. Is there a limit to consciousness? Is there a limit to love? We may choose to travel down A Green Road together with others who are also traveling this way, or creating their own Green Road and potentially explore the infinite expanse of our inner and outer world. There is no limit in the inner worlds or dimensions where anyone can build an infinite number of Green Roads through consciousness.

In the outer world, travelers and builders of A Green Road often support or make a difference for endangered species, affordable housing, human rights, global warming, protecting forests, children's welfare, or saving the planetary blanket of life from dangers such as nuclear energy.

A Green Road travelers often choose to make a difference for endangered species, affordable housing, human rights, global warming, protecting forests, children's welfare, saving the environment, corporate responsibility, women's rights, and green living.

A Green Road builders and travelers often have an interest in learning, teaching, networking or debating ecology, alternative energy, zero carbon emissions, recycling, composting, green business or organic food

How does this story apply to a person individually? How does it apply to life? How does it apply to seven future generations? Let each person speak to one of these questions. There is no wrong or right answer. They may also choose their own focus, outside of these questions.

Either speak or write out the meaning of this story to you, as one individual, in a diary, much like a dream diary. Come back to this story in a year and see if the meaning has changed for you, and it probably will, in a very mysterious way.. If you feel led to, you may decide to form a sacred circle study group, and this story may be the focus at some point in the process.

How To Form A Sacred Circle Study Group

Use the article above to learn how to form a local or virtual global group that discusses this and other stories that make up the Science Of Sustainable Health And Success.

Here is an example of what one person in the sacred circle may share about this story;

The Goliath represents the 1%, which loves to keep the 99%.. in the dark and feeding them bull(#hit, while watching things such as dancing shows, minutia news, and repetitive drama designed to keep people divided, depressed, angry at each other. Most people are afraid to do anything or go anywhere, much less learn anything new, just like these people behind Goliath.

Most people assume that if the mass media news does not talk about it, it is not worth knowing about, so they keep watching and following Goliath.. This state of awareness is a form of low consciousness and awareness, which is a starting point, but it is definitely NOT the point of life. There is a whole world outside of the cave that can be explored, which is the infinite expanse of consciousness, which is represented by David, who goes out alone up on the mountain.

Remember, whatever your interpretation of this story is, is the absolute best interpretation, because it is YOURS, and YOU came up with it. Each person who comes up with their own meaning only adds value, and never takes away anything from anyone else. A sacred circle will probably be filled with as many different interpretations as there are people, and that is how life is supposed to be. In a paradoxical way, the more and different interpretations there are, the richer life is. Each different view of the world as it is, only adds value and meaning to our own view of life, and should not detract from it. Thus, there is no need to judge, kill or imprison anyone for thinking differently about the world and how they view it.

ANYTHING LARGE AND GIGANTIC WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL AND FALL

Anything large will eventually fall, but that is not just a negative. The people within a large organization or structure that is falling apart or failing will create something new and even better after it is gone and dead. The large unsustainable thing will die, but the individuals within keep going on.

So if you are inside of something large that is falling and/or failing, see the positive within this. Look within yourself. Find your David within. Where is your sling? Where are your rocks? Ask yourself questions.  Find the creative spark that will build something even better and more sustainable than the structure or dynamic that is unsustainable and falling.

Share this story with others around you. Always remember that 'best' David's act and do things in ways that benefits seven future generations without causing harm to them.
