Uranium Is Pyrophoric, Burns On Contact With Air, Used In World War II as Tracer Ammunition

In the video above, a sample of uranium is rubbed across a metal file, to produce pyrophoric uranium, which burns on contact with air. But uranium is not the only pyrophoric metal that burns on contact with air. Plutonium is another radioactive metal that can and does burn on contact with air.

Do NOT do this, as it is a life threatening experiment involving deadly 'hot' particles that can be breathed in. If someone were to do this experiment, use contamination protection by using a radioisotope hood, negative pressure chamber in a nuclear lab and a glove box. Dangerous oxidation!

In this clip, depleted metallic and radioactive Uranium shows pyrophoricity when stroked over a metal working file.

Uranium powder and plutonium powder are both pyrophoric.

Uranium powder was used in WWII in tracer ammunition.

The use of tracer ammunition that used radioactive uranium has expanded greatly and was developed into the use of DU weapons and bullets in modern warfare. For more information about the extensive and widespread use of DU both inside and outside of the US, click on the following links;

What is the take away?

First, what happens to uranium and/or plutonium which is in powder (waste) form inside of nuclear waste storage facilities? Could the degradation, smashing or squashing of containers inside of the storage mines result in a pyrophoric nuclear fire that then lights on fire whatever other flammables or explosives are inside of other containers nearby?

It is hard to believe, but rocks and metal can burn. Here is an example of rocks that burned a hole through a pocket after being picked up at a beach.

Second; the history of war is dirty, corrupting, and results in war crimes such as bombing of cities, and genocide of civilians. But wars throughout human history are nothing compared to war today, when things like Agent Orange, depleted uranium or even nuclear weapons are used. These weapons keep on killing and maiming for millions of years. Each war just adds to the toxic, radioactive and chemical burden that must be carried by countless generations.

Bottom line, war is not sustainable, as proven by historical records. But war today has the distinctive disadvantage of causing the extinction of all human life on Earth, plus killing all living beings. Nuclear weapons, DU weapons and chemical weapons must be gotten rid of, even if humans cannot get beyond war, or humans will cease to exist on planet Earth.
