If you drive around Los Angeles you just might spot a silent-running sport utility vehicle sporting an unfamiliar automaker’s badge. The electric car can go nearly 200 miles on a charge, and at the touch of a button its battery will power your house if there’s a blackout. The manufacturer is not some Silicon Valley startup but BYD, the $30 billion Chinese conglomerate. It’s quietly entering the US market by placing small numbers of of the SUV, called the e6, in corporate fleets.
BYD is best known in the US for its famous investor. In 2008, Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway took a 10% in the company that makes, among other things, cars, batteries, mobile phones and solar panels. Earlier this year, BYD became the first Chinese automaker to open a manufacturing plant in the US. It retrofitted a defunct factory in southern California to assemble an electric bus. If China can do this, why can't the US? Have we lost the international auto war so badly, that we cannot even produce a high mileage car or a cutting edge electric vehicle? America seems to be losing it's lead to China in important ways. Could it be that the jobs we exported to China also resulted in a loss of technology and brains? What price is the US paying for the export of millions of jobs to China?
Bottom line, the company that captures the market first will be a dominant player in the next evolution into green transportation. Combine this idea with solar panels that charge up these cars, and we have a zero carbon, zero emission, renewable and sustainable transportation system that is decentralized and job creating. After all, installing all of 100 million solar panels and charging stations in every home will create a lot of jobs, and it may just save the world from global suicide, which is where we are headed if we not implement answers like this in a crash course manner.
