Another tropical cyclone- Banyan - is expected to hit the central Philippines today. It comes as parts of three provinces in the north remain flooded due to previous typhoons Nesat and Nalgae. This early in the onslaught of cyclone Banyan, floods have already occurred in the southern provinces of Agusan and Misamis. Hundreds of families have evacuated to safer ground.  Storm Banyan is expected to spare the already devastated northern region, but threatens more than twenty provinces in the central and southern parts. The storm carries peak winds of 80 kilometres an hour, and is the 18th cyclone to hit the Philippines this year.

At least 900 factories have been shut because of the flooding, many of them auto-parts manufacturers, and vehicle production will be down this year as a result, but the government’s stimulus measures boosted the confidence of small- and medium-enterprises in August. Industry Minister Wannarat Channukul said on Wednesday more than 900 industrial plants have been inundated by the floods, affecting more than 200,000 workers.

Flooding in central and northern Thailand blamed on unusually heavy monsoon rains and poor management of the country's large dams has left at least 237 people dead. Twenty-six of the 77 Thai provinces have been hit by floods this rainy season, affecting 2.6 million people.
