Volcanoes all over the world are showing a great deal of activity.  Is this just business as usual, or the sign of something much more cataclysmic that is soon to come upon the world?

I watched as he opened the sixth seal. There was a great earthquake. Iceland: A sharp series of earthquakes began shortly before 3 am last night in the northern Katla caldera below Mýrdalsjökull glacier in south Iceland with the first quake measuring well over three points on the Richter scale, according to geophysicist Benedikt Ófeigsson who was called out to the Icelandic Meteorological Office.

Russia: Kamchatka volcano Shiveluch has emitted a column of ash up to 8km high. There is no danger for the local population. No volcanic dust fall has been registered in the nearby villages, the Kamchatka branch of the Geophysical service of the Russian Academy of Sciences reported on Tuesday. Last time Shiveluch became active in May 2009 and since then emissions of gas, ash and even lava have been occurring on a regular basis.

Indonesia: Anak Krakatau, a volcanic island in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in Indonesia, erupted on Tuesday sending columns of ash and rock hurtling high into the air. The rise in volcanic and earthquake activity prompted authorities to put in place a 2km exclusion zone for tourists and local fishermen. The Indonesian Volcanology and Geology Disaster Mitigation Centre reported that an estimated 6,000-7,000 volcanic earthquakes were recorded daily during the weekend and on Monday.  Daily earthquake totals usually do not exceed 100-200.

Canary Islands: The Instituto Geografico Nacional (IGN) has reported surface deformations exceeding 35mm on the Spanish island of El Hierro, where residents have been alert for a possible volcanic eruption. The number of earthquakes recorded since July 17 on the smallest of The Canary Islands exceeded 9250 on Tuesday morning. IGN confirmed on Monday that 1172 earthquakes were recorded last week, the majority of which were located in the sea to the SW of the 280-sqkm island.
