Netanyahu: Israel 'to be generous' in Palestine deal

Israel has no intention to draw back to the indefensible pre-1967 borders in order to reach any sort of peace treaty.  To do so would be suicide.  We thank God that at least the leadership here in Canada have the sense to see the reasons why as well.

Israeli PM Benjamin Netanyahu has told the US Congress Israel would be generous with the size of a future Palestinian state but that the border could not rest at pre-1967 lines. But he said he was "willing to make painful compromises" to achieve peace. A Palestinian official said the Israeli PM had added more obstacles to a deal. President Barack Obama's recent call for Israel to return to its 1967 borders has brought back bad memories and concerns for many. Some people call the 1967 lines "Auschwitz borders," or the kind that could lead to another Holocaust. Others say such a move would be "suicide" for Israel. "I don't think Israel will ever return to the '67 lines, but if somebody thinks this is a good idea, this is exactly the situation that will bring us the next war," said Reserve Maj. Gen. Uzi Dayan.

Canada refuses to join the United States in calling for Israel to return to 1949 Armistice borders, the Toronto Globe and Mail reported Monday. At a briefing ahead of the G8 summit that is about to begin in France, federal Canadian officials said the basis for the negotiations must be mutually agreed upon by Israel and the Palestinian Authority.
