Prophecy Sign:  Food shortages, famines and increasing food prices.

Bible prophecy is very clear that in the last days, there will be increasing shortages of affordable food, driving many people into poverty and starvation.  The increasing food costs will most affect the impoverished third world nations. However, according to the prophecies in Revelation 6, these rising food costs would also be a major issue throughout the world during the time of the Tribulation period.  Both Jesus Christ and the Apostle John had much to say about food prices and famines at the end-times.

Nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom. There will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are the beginning of birth pains. Matthew 24:7-8 NIV

When He opened the third seal, I heard the third living creature say, “Come and see.” So I looked, and behold, a black horse, and he who sat on it had a pair of scales in his hand.  And I heard a voice in the midst of the four living creatures saying, “A quart of wheat for a denarius, and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the oil and the wine.” Revelation 6:5-6 NKJV

Lingering instability in North Africa and the Middle East is pushing food prices close to record highs. The World Bank said Thursday food prices have increased 36 percent since this time last year, helping push about 44 million people into poverty.  It also warned that another 10 percent increase in food prices would drive another 10 million people into extreme poverty, subsisting on less than $1.25 a day. World Bank President Robert Zoellick told reporters in Washington ahead of the World Bank and International Monetary Fund Spring Meetings that the world was in what he called a "danger zone."  He said there is a risk food prices will see new spikes over the next two years.
