We will state for the record that we believe in the existence of a place called Hell, and that this place is the ultimate destination of those people at the age of accountability who have lived their lives outside a restored relationship with the Almighty God of the bible. The only way to restoration is through the atoning blood of Christ Jesus.
With that said, we have no idea what is in store for those souls that end up in such a horrible place, nor do we wish upon anyone to end up there. But we do know many will, even those that seem to have lived an exemplary life on planet earth. For it is not our deeds or good works that restore us to God, but by the acceptance only of the free gift of salvation offered to us by Jesus Christ.
For those like Rob Bell that teach another gospel about this place called hell, they will have to answer to God as to why they watered down this very important part of our present paradigm. Even Jesus taught of hell, and it's not a pretty picture. We do agree however with Rob Bell that far too many Christians are the "fire and brimstone you're going to hell you evil person" bunch of zealots.
If you approach the unsaved with this kind of attitude you will attract about as many people as a big hairy fat guy will at a cheerleader convention. Instead, start with a right attitude, and approach people knowing they are hurting and have problems that only Jesus Christ can help with.
By the way, watch the short You-Tube video of Rob Bell squirming under the direct questions from the program host. Priceless. Mr. Bell would make a great politician in the way he obfuscates and dances around the question without giving an answer.
But in your hearts set apart Christ as Lord. Always be prepared to give an answer to everyone who asks you to give the reason for the hope that you have. But do this with gentleness and respect, 1 Peter 3:15 NIV
From the article:
When Chad Holtz lost his old belief in hell, he also lost his job. The pastor of a rural United Methodist church in North Carolina wrote a note on his Facebook page supporting a new book by Rob Bell, a prominent young evangelical pastor and critic of the traditional view of hell as a place of eternal torment for billions of damned souls. Two days later, Holtz was told complaints from church members prompted his dismissal from Marrow's Chapel in Henderson .
In the book, Bell criticizes the belief that a select number of Christians will spend eternity in the bliss of heaven while everyone else is tormented forever in hell. "This is misguided and toxic and ultimately subverts the contagious spread of Jesus' message of love, peace, forgiveness and joy that our world desperately needs to hear," he writes in the book.
