The Apostle John wrote in the book of Revelation about a coming time when the price of food would become outrageously priced.  In fact, to purchase enough provisions for a day would cost a days wages, (Revelation 6:5-6).  With the current world economic volatility, rumours of wars, and global climate anomalies, the potential for hyper-inflation in food prices is very real.

There is bad news on the global food front. In an alert issued this week, the Food and Agriculture Organisation (FAO) warned that more than two-thirds of China's gigantic wheat crop may be under risk "because of substantially below-normal rainfall" this winter. The affected areas in the northern plains of China produced over 75 million tonne of China's total production of 112 million tonne of wheat last year. Any shortfall in Chinese production would have serial effects on availability and prices of wheat around the world.

The impact of China's drought could have serious effects on global food prices and supplies, writes Keith Bradsher.  A SEVERE drought is threatening the wheat crop in China, the world's largest wheat producer, resulting in shortages of drinking water for people and livestock.  China has been essentially self-sufficient in grain for decades, for national security reasons. Any move by China to import large quantities of food in response to the drought could drive international prices even higher than the record levels recently reached.

As the unnatural weather conditions continue to wreak havoc, governments around the world are preparing to ‘tighten the belt’ as food prices are expected to soar as food levels drop. The floods in Australia, the prolonged snowstorms in Europe and the United States, and the potential drought in China, have all contributed to the rise in world food prices.
