(Pittsburgh Tribune Review) - When the Rev. John Haney came to St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin in 1983, the church elementary school charged a $50 book fee for each parish child to attend.

Get rid of it, Haney said. Providing a free Catholic education to parishioners is vital.

THE CATHOLIC KNIGHT: Father Haney was right! Every Catholic child should be ENTITLED to a Catholic education. For the Church to provide anything less, then turn around and condemn public schools for teaching godless immorality, is pure hypocrisy.

'The Catholic Knight' has a simple solution to the Catholic education problem, and we can make it happen if we put our minds to it. Make Catholic schools free to all Catholic children. Then turn around and mandate that every Catholic parent tithe their income to their parish, IF they can afford it. Otherwise, require that they give whatever they can. Then call upon other parishioners who have more financial resources to offer more for the sake of the poor children in the parish. Finally, charge tuition for non-Catholic children.

Write your local bishop. Forward him a hard copy of the story I cited above. Get as many people in your diocese as you can to do the same thing. Keep on it. Pester your local Church leadership. Let them know it's a contradiction to condemn public schools for their godless immorality and then fail to provide a free alternative to Catholic children. It's the squeaky wheel that gets the oil. What we need is a whole lot of squeaky wheels. Yes, we can do it, if we put our minds to it. It really is that simple. It really will work, and yes, we really should do it. Anything less is a scandal.
