MASSIVE AMOUNT OF RENEWABLE ENERGY IS CONNECTING TO GRID

The amount of renewable energy connecting to the grid is huge. 



There is a massive amount of renewable energy connecting to the electric grid. The potential of renewable energy is so large, that it can completely replace all carbon and nuclear sources, fairly quickly.

JAPAN HAS 70 NUCLEAR POWER PLANTS WORTH OF SOLAR IN PIPELINE, SINCE FUKUSHIMA MEGA NUCLEAR DISASTER



"So even under the most benign of political environments – which the Kagoshima restart process enjoyed – Japan’s march back into nuclear power will be stunted. Given the further pressure the industry is feeling to go into renewables as a result of the feed-in tariff system, passed in the final days of the Kan administration, which thanks to its generous payment schedule for solar-generated power has resulted in the submission of 70 nuclear power plants’ worth of large-scale solar power project proposals – the outlook for public support of nuclear power plant restarts beyond the first dozen reactors is dim indeed."

This statistic is ignoring the small scale hydro, solar, geothermal, wind and other renewable energy projects going on not just in Japan, but in all other countries.

Surprise, surprise, surprise. The Florida Public Service Commission this week is expected to gut energy efficiency goals for electric utilities and swallow the industry's illogical argument that it costs more to conserve power than it does to build more power plants. And those rebates for rooftop solar panels that the utilities hate? Kiss them goodbye. This is what happens in a state with no coherent energy policy and no political will to stand up to the power companies who won big in this month's elections….

Behind the scenes, ALEC is spearheading the fight in the USA, with legislation that has a very negative anti-renewable energy agenda. The following links and summaries to stories illustrate what the huge pro carbon and pro nuclear for profit industries are doing to stop or block the growth of renewable energies.  

One tactic is to create legislation or rules that prevent any new renewable energy from hooking into the grid. Another tactic is to charge small or even large renewable energy producers so much money per month for the 'privilege' of hooking up to the grid, that no one can afford to do it, thus making it not affordable to even do the renewable energy project.

ALEC LAUNCHING ALL OUT ATTACK ON CLEAN ZERO CARBON RENEWABLE ENERGY SOURCES

ALEC is launching an all out attack on renewable energy sources, because the renewable energy industry is now threatening the very existence of the more expensive carbon and nuclear energy industries. 

ALEC calls for penalties on 'freerider' homeowners in assault on clean energy
• Documents reveal conservative group's anti-green agenda
• Strategy to charge people who install their own solar panels
• Environmentalists accuse Alec of protecting utility firms' profits

For 2014, Alec plans to promote a suite of model bills and resolutions aimed at blocking Barack Obama from cutting greenhouse gas emissions, and state governments from promoting the expansion of wind and solar power through regulations known as Renewable Portfolio Standards. Gabe Elsner, director of the Energy and Policy Institute, said the attack on small-scale solar was part of the larger Alec project to block clean energy. "They are trying to eliminate pro-solar policies in the states to protect utility industry profits," he said.

The group sponsored at least 77 energy bills in 34 states last year. The measures were aimed at opposing renewable energy standards, pushing through the Keystone XL pipeline project, and barring oversight on fracking, according to an analysis by the Centre for Media and Democracy.


JAPAN PREVENTS NEW RENEWABLE ENERGY PROJECTS FROM HOOKING UP TO GRID

In Japan, utilities are preventing renewable energy projects from hooking up to the grid. 

Japan to Examine Solar-Power Bottlenecks
Under the system of guaranteed rates, also known as feed-in tariffs, 11 gigawatts of renewable-power capacity went online as of June 30, of which 98% was solar power, according to government data. Investors put $28.6 billion into renewable power in Japan during 2013, a joint study by the United Nations and Bloomberg New Energy Finance estimated. The five utilities that have refused new solar power are Kyushu Electric Power Co. , Okinawa Electric Power Co.  Shikoku Electric Power Co., Tohoku Electric Power Co.  and Hokkaido Electric Power Co.

The Japanese nuclear industry passed a Secrecy Law, which had the effect of shutting down any critics of the nuclear power industry. Despite a majority of citizens being opposed to restarting nuclear plants in Japan, the nuclear industry is moving ahead anyway, as fast as they can. No lessons were learned from Fukushima either in Japan or the US.

CONVERTING NUCLEAR PLANTS TO WIND ENERGY

Jebus June 23, 2014 "Nuclear Power Stations Could be Converted to Generate Wind Power

Solar Wind Energy’s Solar Wind Downdraft Tower uses far less space and, as the name suggests, generates an internal downdraft, placing wind turbines at the base to generate wind power. A fine mist of continuously-recycle water cools the air, making it denser than the hot air outside the tower, generating wind speeds of up to 50 mph. The company figures that the overall yearly power output of a test tower in San Luis, Arizona, will be around 435 MWh.

The design of the wind tower got me thinking, especially when placed side-by-side with nuclear reactor cooling towers. Nuclear cooling towers are updraft towers, which take hot reactor cooling water and blast it into the center of the cooling tower. This heats up the air, making it less dense than the air outside the tower. The warm air rises, and the partial vacuum created pulls in cooler air from the bottom of the tower. Could nuclear power station cooling towers be adapted for use as downdraft, or even updraft, wind power generators?
