International Beach Sand Radiation Readings; Lists Specific Resort Beaches All Around The World, Hawaii, Brazil, Japan, Many Other Countries

Why would anyone want to test dry sand or dried seaweed on beaches for radiation levels? According to scientific research, radioactive substances can wash up on beaches, and/or concentrate there via sea spray. Dry materials like sand or washed up dried out seaweeds and dead sea critters are much easier to test than water, because water blocks and absorbs radiation.

Testing sand, seaweed and critters laying on beaches is something that any average citizen scientist that own a radiation detector can do, while testing ocean water is impossible without special equipment available only in nuclear laboratories. While Geiger counters cannot determine the specific radioactive element, it can warn of danger, and give a heads up to a community.

Brazil - Radioactive Beach Sand

Brazil - James Tekton February 11, 2014 "If your beach tests 30 CPM, (same as background) go ahead and enjoy it. But if it tests 100 or 400 CPM, or even higher, you may decide that the risk is not worth it, especially if you have kids. But maybe your enjoyment of that beach is worth the risk of 100 CPM; only you can decide."

UK SELLAFIELD

arclight July 17, 2012  anyone get any sea sediment samples… some food for thought here

"..Record number of radioactive particles found on beaches near Sellafield
Seven beaches contained 383 particles found in 2020-11, while Sellafield insists health risks are 'very low'…" "…But the HPA has also pointed to a series of "uncertainties" in the beach monitoring that could lead to its risk assessment being reviewed. The latest equipment might miss tiny specks that could be inhaled, it said, as well as buried alpha radioactivity that "could give rise to a significant risk to health if ingested".

A local environmental group expressed concern that in some areas, particles seemed to reappear after they had been cleaned up. "This warrants closure of the beaches or at least the erection of warning signs for parents and others of the health dangers posed," said Janine Allis-Smith, from Cumbrians Opposed to a Radioactive Environment. Documents released under freedom of information law show that in 2010 the Environment Agency agreed that monitoring for contamination on the beaches should avoid peak periods such as during bank holidays. This followed a complaint from St Bees parish council expressing "strong concern that this would have an adverse impact on tourism.".."

Alpha particles don't show up on Geigers unless you are right on them.."

Plutonium in Childrens’ Teeth. [ 11 December 2003]
The presence of BNFL’s plutonium legacy is readily identified in the local environment where river estuary samples show Plutonium 239 & 240 (Pu239 &240) to be present at a level of almost 7000 Bq/kg. A recent study by University College Dublin showed that plutonium contamination of the Solway Firth north of Sellafield was 100 times greater than previously thought. The report also confirmed earlier studies which has shown how, through storm and tidal action, plutonium deposits on the sea bed around Sellafield’s discharge pipeline are driven shorewards and concentrated in sea spray. On land the dried out dust particles are resuspended in air and become available for human intake via inhalation and ingestion. It is estimated that over half a ton of plutonium has been discharged from Sellafield into the Irish Sea over the last 50 years.  Pu 239 has a radioactive half-life of 24,000 years, Pu 240 6,500 years and Pu 241 14.4 years.

FOLLOW UP RADIATION TESTING OF SEA VEGETABLES AND LIVING ORGANISMS ALL THE WAY UP THE FOOD CHAIN NEEDED

What is even more important is to monitor the dried seaweed and other sea animal radiation levels, because all living things concentrate or accumulate radiation. 70% of all radiation accumulated over time in the human body (after an initial plume from accident or nuclear bomb) comes from food and drinks.

Different species will concentrate in different amounts. A lot needs to be tested because one sample can test normal and the next can test 50 Bq/kg, and the next can read 2,000 Bq/kg. Different species will show up with different amounts, so it important to test as many different types as possible to see what is going on in an area.

Unless someone tests 1,000 individual critters of all species involved (seaweed, fish, crabs, shellfish, and then do it on a monthly basis, it is hard to draw any really firm conclusions about average radiation levels in anything, or how they are changing over time. But any radiation reading is better than none, so one beach sand reading is MUCH better than none at all.

Sand is a good starting place to test for radiation, because if sand, debris or seaweed tests high in radiation, then there are potentially more reasons to look at radiation concentrating and accumulating up the food chain to humans as well. That would also be the trigger to call in the EPA or other authorities to identify what is causing the radiation reading specifically.

NATURAL RADIATION IS HARMLESS 'HORMESIS THEORY' DEBUNKED

The public does not need empty assurances that all 'natural' radiation is 'safe', even if the levels are measuring 150,000 CPM per minute. It is also important to understand that even 'natural' radiation is potentially hazardous; both radon and thorium have negative health effects. To alleviate the doubts and fears among a growing number of US citizens, it is becoming critically important for a trusted lab to do massive amounts of testing on a regular basis in this kind of situation, in order to inform the citizens about what is REALLY going on, instead of empty assurances that everything is safe on the Pacific coast, despite multiple animal species experiencing mass die offs since 2011.

WHAT EFFECT IS RADIATION RELEASED FROM FUKUSHIMA HAVING ON FOOD WEB AND HUMAN BEINGS?

What is really difficult to measure and hard to figure out is; what effects is the 400 to 6000 pounds of plutonium that came out of Fukushima, having on the whole ecosystem and on human beings?

Several scientists and studies have documented that plutonium went around the world, and plutonium from Fukushima was measured in the USA and as far away as Lithuania. Why no plutonium showed up at the site above is a mystery, but there are clean and 'hot' radiation spots all around the world, so this could be one of this 'clean' plutonium areas.

Even much more sophisticated and expensive equipment than what Safecast used on the beach above has a hard time finding low doses of plutonium in animals, beach sand or plants. Tritium is almost impossible to find, and cannot be measured with a normal Geiger counter.

Plutonium contamination is present all over the world, even if it is at very low levels. The question is; what effect is it having? How does one track very low doses of plutonium through the food chain and living food web ecosystems in the Pacific ocean?

CALLING ALL CITIZEN SCIENTISTS

Do you have a radiation detector, such as the Inspector shown above? Take it with you on vacation, as well as your video recorder. Take a radiation reading while you are taping it, and post it on Youtube, as in the video above.

Once you have an international beach sand radiation reading to share with the AGRP network, contact AGRP via email address below, or leave a link to a youtube video providing evidence of your beach sand radiation reading in the comments section below. Your citizen scientist radiation reading may be added to this or future reports.

Start with an air reading, as in the video above, then go down to 1 inch away from the sand. take readings from several places on the beach, as well as any dried seaweed and/or debris washed up on shore. Post your video on Youtube and contact AGRP to have it posted in this article or future updates. Provide a name of the beach, the name of the closest town, current date and counts per minute (CPM) readings, preferably with a pancake style detector, such as the one shown in the video above.

(Don't touch the sand or whatever you are testing with your meter, as it may contaminate it and make it useless. Protect it with a baggie, and don't touch what you are measuring.)

The more radiation measurements that the public has, the better the data.

AGRP's goal is to accumulate enough international dry beach sand and seaweed radiation readings, that there will be a baseline to draw from in case of any radical future increases. That way, no one can claim that the high radiation readings were always there, and it is all 'natural'.

GET YOUR BEACH SAND, DRIED SEAWEED OR OTHER SAMPLE TESTED

It is possible test your soil or water samples for radiation if you do not have a Geiger Counter. The cost to test per sample is only $39.

If you believe that your soil or water is contaminated  with radioactive contamination, our Alpha-Beta-Gamma detector system for screening low level samples is a simple and cost effective method of detection.  Please call: 1-860-482-6606 Peter Febbroriello, who is working with Safecast, for more details.

The sample testing is done with a very sensitive 2 inch pancake style detector inside of a lead box, using a timed test. It is possible to test for alpha, beta and gamma radiation at fairly low levels, especially if the sample is dry. More extensive and expensive tests can be done to isolate what the radioactive isotope is, if radiation levels are found that are of a concern.

Once you do get a radiation reading result of your beach sand or other sample, please share your result with AGRP, at agreenroad atsymbol gmail.com

The video above serves as a reminder about why everyone is doing this sacred work to defend and protect what is given to us in trust for 7 future generations.
