An earthquake measuring 7.1 magnitude hit Papua New Guinea on Wednesday afternoon, the United States Geological Survey (USGS) said. The tremor struck at a depth of 75 miles, about 137 miles north-northwest of the capital Port Moresby at 3:05 p.m. local time.

A magnitude 6.3 earthquake struck 71 kilometers southeast of Gorontalo on Indonesia’s Sulawesi island at 2:52 p.m. Jakarta time today, without any risk of a tsunami, the state geophysics agency said. The temblor’s depth was 142 kilometers, the Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency said in a mobile-phone text message.

A powerful 6.7 magnitude earthquake struck south western Mexico on Saturday afternoon, killing at least three and leaving many districts in the capital without power.

Local officials say, the quake rattled Mexico's western state of Guerrero at around 7:50 p.m. local time, and the tremor was felt as far as the capital, Mexico City, and a few other states, knocking out lights and sending people rushing into the streets. The country, however, did not suffer any major damage.

A strong 6.0-magnitude earthquake struck early Sunday near the South Sandwich Islands, a remote British territory near Antarctica and South America's southern tip, the US Geological Survey said. No immediate tsunami warning was issued.
