A strong earthquake shook northern Japan on Thursday night, but there is no danger of a tsunami. The Meteorological Agency said the magnitude 6.1 quake struck off the southern coast of Hokkaido at 7:25 p.m. The quake hit at a depth of about 30 kilometers. The agency did not issue a tsunami warning.

A strong earthquake struck Thursday morning near the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant hit by a powerful tsunami earlier this year. There were no immediate reports of damage or injuries.
