In spite of pledges by the coalition government that the Nanny State would be dismantled, snooping techniques have expanded and intensified. Regulators are struggling to monitor the relentless expansion of high-tech surveillance mechanisms such as unmanned spy drones, profiling by snooping on social networking sites and GPS tracking of employees.
The government’s attempts to reduce invasions of privacy are being swamped by ever-increasing intrusions on a grand scale. A report by information commissioner Christopher Graham reveals concerns expressed by his predecessor in 2006 that the UK was ‘sleepwalking into a surveillance society’ are even more relevant in 2011. The report states database, covert, visual and many other forms of surveillance have expanded, with much going beyond tolerable limits.
