Cyber-attacks could cause global 'catastrophe'

The world is so tied to technology.  It would be unmanageable to think about a situation where all power grids are shut down, (no electricity), satellite communication disabled, (no phones, internet), or perhaps a malicious worm is loosed on the world crashing all computer networks, (no banking, grocery store scanners, etc.).  All because of a targeted cyber war, or a natural event directed at us from the sun.

While the bible does describe fearful events emanating from the heavens, it also tells us that mankind will be controlled by a system that can shut down a person’s ability to buy or sell, and that is able to monitor every person on the planet.  The two prophecies seem incongruent.  On the one hand we could be sent back to an 18th century scenario, while on the other, it sounds more like futuristic science fiction.

Keep in mind that this is a very big world, and that the end-time prophecies extend over a lengthy period of time, (at least 7 years for the Tribulation).  Some parts of the world make in fact see the damages of such catastrophes, while others not.  Or the damages that do happen are repaired given time.  What is for sure, such events would throw the world into chaos, which is the ideal situation for a global leader to enter the scene seemingly with all the answers to the world’s problems.

.....a fierce-looking king, a master of intrigue, will arise. He will become very strong, but not by his own power. He will cause astounding devastation and will succeed in whatever he does. He will destroy those who are mighty, the holy people. He will cause deceit to prosper, and he will consider himself superior. When they feel secure, he will destroy many and take his stand against the Prince of princes. Yet he will be destroyed, but not by human power. Daniel 8:23-25 NIV

From the article:
A succession of multiple cyber-attacks could "become a full-scale global shock" on a par with a pandemic and the collapse of the world financial system, the report by the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) said.
"What should concern policy-makers are combinations of events – two different cyber-events occurring at the same time, or a cyber-event taking place during some other form of disaster or attack," the report said.
One such event may be triggered by "a very large-scale solar flare (bursts of energy from the sun) which physically destroys key communications components such as satellites, cellular base stations and switches", the report said. The last major event was in 1859, and the next sunspot peak is expected in 2012-13.
