(AP) - Under the change, the sign of peace, which now takes place moments before the reception of communion, would come earlier. Arinze said the change might help create a more solemn atmosphere as the faithful are preparing to receive communion....If approved, this change would make the new and reformed Novus Ordo strikingly different than the "defective" liturgy the American Church has been celebrating since the 1970's. Already, the Vatican and USCCB have approved a new English translation of the liturgy, which is more in sync with the original Latin text. This is to go into effect in the United States sometime in 2010.

The days of the "hootenanny mass" are soon coming to an end. That's not to say that liturgical abuse and innovation won't still happen, because so long as their are priests who don't value tradition, they will continue. However, what we have in these liturgical reforms is a new Novus Order, that more closely resembles the old Tridentine, which makes liturgical abuse and innovations just a little bit harder to do. When the new English translation hits the U.S. Catholic Church, combined with the kind of liturgical reforms mentioned in the story above, American Catholics will for the first time in an entire generation, be introduced to a liturgy that accurately reflects the real intentions behind the Novus Ordo mass issued by Rome over 30 years ago. I'm sure it will be something totally foreign to most American Catholics. I suspect that by 2010, many American Catholics will be scratching their heads and wondering what all this new beautiful liturgy is about.
