The H5N1 avian flu virus is so prevalent in Indonesia that outbreaks among poultry rarely make the news anymore.  The local media will sometimes carry reports, but the International media largely ignores the situation.

Today the Vietnam News Agency felt the recent uptick in infected poultry in the province of East Lampung deserved some attention.

Jakarta (VNA) - Bird flu is on the rise in East Lampung of Indonesia , prompting local authorities to order back-yard farmers to keep their chickens inside their coops, local media reported on February 13.

The avian influenza virus had spread through eight sub districts in East Lampung District, Ankara news agency quoted head of the Participatory Disease Surveillance (PDS) team Dewanto as saying.

The virus was detected earlier this month in six sub districts, but at present it had struck poultry in 12 villages in eight sub districts, Dewanto said, adding it is possible that the poultry will spread the virus to other sub districts.

Among sub districts hit by bird flu virus were Batanghari, Way Jepara, Metro Kibang, Sukadana, Sekampung and Purbolinggo.

Lamgpung is a province of Indonesia , located on the southern tip of Sumatra island. East Lampung District, Central Lampung District and Bandarlampung city of the province have seen several bird flu outbreaks over the past few years.

The Indonesian Health Ministry on February 12 confirmed the 127th human case of bird flu infection. The latest victim, a 15-year-old girl from West Jakarta , was now in critical condition at a hospital and investigations are underway to find out the source of infection.- Enditem
